In Doom/Quake, you can pretty much do what you desire. You can go ahead and explore and get use to the entire region that the game has to offer you or competently shoot your way to the finish line. In Modern FPS games, you are forced to go through informative cutscenes that seem more like experiencing a cinematic movie rather than playing a video game

Exactly! The game industry has been killed and replaced with the interactive movie industry. No longer does challenge, precision controls, and good level designs matter. Now it's just linear hallways and cutscenes every couple of minutes. Gameplay is almost non-existent. It's all about the graphics and story now. If the cutscenes are entertaining, then it's considered a great game.
