Lightbulb Atari Wants To Reinvent Pong [Slashdot]

mikejuk writes "Atari is offering up to $100,000 in a contest for a new version of Pong, the classic game that launched video games 40 years ago, for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. The judges for the contest include Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari, who came up with the original idea for Pong. So, what does a 21st century Pong look like? How does it play? And what role does touch have in this, the simplest of games?"

would have to be a 3d pong so the ball can go up... and side to side....
and it would have to make some kinda pain so when you lose you feel it....

    like this

It would need 3D rendered fully cinematic cut scenes. I'm not sure who should voice paddle 1, maybe Gary Busey.

Maybe instead of a top down view, it should be a side view instead.

She could be the voice of the ball, I could see that working.

What if instead of a top down view, it was a view from underneath? Like what you would see from under the table. Mostly just the table. It's more mysterious like some sort of thriller, which would work with the Heavy Rain style cut scenes.

There is no graphic skin or perspective change that will truly ever do pong justice without a rotary controller. The spinner is the absolute key to Pong, and no iOS or Android app with a touch screen will ever replace that, even with direct touch control. The spinner is king. Nothing beats a standalone late 70's Pong clone that plays multiple games and keeps score.

An airhockey mode would be a nice addition IMHO. Wonder if since there's no paddle or spinner control, how about using a mouse?

    Hmmm...maybe a turn-based RPG, or an open-world sandbox game?

I actually have a PC game like this, I believe it's called SLAM! or something similar. It's for Windows 3.1 or Win 95 but it's really fun. You do control the game with the mouse, you can adjust the angle of the view too so it's pretty much like playing actual air hockey.

Received some emails dealing with this. Great big meh in my book. Guessing whatever comes of it will be mediocre (like most things atari has done for most of its existence heh)

We've been having Pong sequels for years. Come on, they're all variations of Pong.

The graphics could be better, but this game really rocks.

I couldn't agree more. Anything other than a rotary controller is going to be subpar at best. Pong needs this to make the game fun. Tack as many extras, graphics, gimmicks on top and it still will be inferior without the rotary controller.
