What are people's opinion here of MINECRAFT? I did run around a little bit in it, perhaps I am too oldschool to "get" it lol. Is there anything you guys particularly like about it? Am I missing something? Give me your opinions

WHERE DID THEIR HAIR GO?
I tried playing it, but it's just not my kind of game. If you can get into a decent server, you'll have a blast with it, no pun intended.
OK, well for those that like it more details, WHY do you like it,. WHAT do you do it in? Is there a point or is the point the fact that there IS no point.?

WHERE DID THEIR HAIR GO?
WHY
-Its more or less the ultimate sandbox game. You can build practically anything you want withing the constraints of the game engine (blocks) and build for however long you want. There are no objectives, narrative, characters, etc. just you and the world you want to create. Its a kind of freedom and feeling of exploration that you don't get in other games. It can give you a real sense of accomplishment finding X thing or finishing Y building that for me is unique to minecraft.
In minecraft there are two main game modes Creative and Survival. Creative gives you access to every block (or "item") in the game, allows you to fly, and instantly destroy every block to quickly and efficently build things. Survival drops you in the game world with nothing, makes you deal with enemy threats, and forces you to think more while you play. I personally find Creative very boring after several minutes with no thread or problems to really solve while I find Survival incredibly engaging and can lose myself for hours. Multiplayer servers add a whole new dimension of gameplay from teamwork on massive scales or hardcore PVP depending on the individual server so really a world of possible variations on the same basic formula.
WHAT
-Mostly dig or mine for materials to build with.
-Then build stuff of ever increasing complexity.
-Then mine for more materials.
-Repeat.
Point or No Point
-There really is no goal in minecraft and some people find that disconcerting or pointless and others just enjoy it for it is. I can see how this can be a problem for some people but for me it isn't. I grew up playing Maxis games which also seldom have an end goal so maybe I'm just used to it. lol
I think its cool and creative and I've seen some neat stuff done with it. I've downloaded but barely used it sadly time is not plentiful enough to really enjoy it as it should be with so many things competing for my attention when I'm free
From what little I've seen and played of Minecraft, I like it. I've always been a fan of 3D builders. Once a holiday sale crawls around, I plan on getting a copy.
I've never played it but I will probably try out the demo when it comes to XBL in a few months.

Exploring is fun, and it is best multiplayer. I've been playing with coworkers lately and I'm building us a railroad while he handles other tasks. We can both pop in and out of the game for a few minutes at a time from anywhere (we travel a lot) and put a bit of time into whatever project we are working on at the time and log out.
It's perfect for me. Also runs in a browser.
It makes me sick. Something about the field of view makes me horribly dizzy.
Just take a gander over at the irc chatroom #vbender. The people there/here won't STFU about minecraft.
When it comes to survival mode it's all good, but when you get into creative mode you might as well get 3rd party programs to just drop your creations into the game, it's already like cheat mode anyway.
So yeah, pure survival mode is fun.
