Strange Behavior: Zelda Oracle of Seasons Displays XXXXXX Instead of File Names

Symptoms: The 3 save files on the main screen all Display as XXXXXX. When trying to erase a save, the save returns to XXXXXX immediately.

I've tried cleaning the cartridge contacts AND replacing the save battery, and nothing seems to work.

Was the XXXXX showing before you replaced the battery? I would try removing the battery, letting it sit for a while to make sure the save is lost, then booting it up without a battery to see how it behaves.
