Is this essentially a re-release of the Carl Mueller game, an improvement on it, or something entirely new?

Intelligentvision released Carl Mueller's DK Arcade last year.

D1K Arcade is a similar, but it is enhanced.

It contains a Japanese mode.....you can play all 4 screens back to back. The control has been tweaked and is improved. The enemy action is more accurate. Some arcade tricks work on this version.......control the barrels.....it has digitized sounds....it has a code for a 30 frames per second mode that gets rid of an issue with disappearing objects on some HD TVs that have trouble displaying the smooth 60 frames per second moving objects.

So, if you own the Intelligentvision release, I would suggest getting D2K Arcade. However, if you own neither, you should really pick this up.

So, if I understand the website correctly, D1K is included in DIIK?

Yes, D1K is included in D2K. However, there is one advantage to owning D1K, and that is that it has a Japanese mode.

For those who like playing all 4 screens back to back, (The pie factory is the second screen) there is a reason to own it.

D2K does not have the Japanese mode.

    Default Great game

This IS the definitive version to play Donkey Kong. Totally recommend this to fans of DK.

By far the most played intellivsion game I have in my collection to date.
