    Default dreamcast online

just curirous if anyone here still plays the DC online?....i remember playing it online like a decade ago and loving it...nfl 2k2...nba 2k2...daytona usa..i used to love playing those online. it was the first time i ever played any type of videogame online...really brings back memories.

i still have my dc and 45 or so games....including the only ones you can still play online...starlancer and quake 3 arena....i dont have 4x4 evolution (i think you can still play that one) or PSO unfortunately

also unfortunately i dont have the dial up connection necessary to play. sometimes i miss playing my DC more than i do playing XB live now or ps3 online..

i would love to get the BBA but there's no way i pay the $150 + on ebay..

If you want to get online and play some dreamcast games, I don't think you'll have much luck. The sega network doesn't exist anymore, so that eliminates most of the games right off the bat.

I know there are still a few private servers for Phantasy Star, but since you said you don't have that game, that won't help either.

I've been meaning to get online and at least try Phantasy Star (and see who is there, if anyone), but all I have is the dial up adapater, so I don't know if even that would be worth the time/effort.

well i know you can still get online with starlancer and quake 3 due to private servers and i think gamespy still hosts starlancer...i actually did play starlancer briefly online about 6 years ago ....i had dial up at the time at my old apt......i remember meeting one dude on there and that was it....i tried to play at like every possible time during the day and night..

The broadband adapter is way too expensive for me to justify getting online with the Dreamcast. I just wish more servers for PS2 games were active, or allowed a way to directly connect to IP addresses.

I keep an old PC set up as a DC modem adapter. I don't have a BBA, but I can dial in to the computer and share a connection to the DC. I've played some PSO with it, but that's really it. The web browser isn't very useful now that the web has moved on from pure HTML, but I have used it in the last few years.

Dreamcast's online was almost doomed to fail from the beginning. At that time, if you had a dial-up connection, you were probably already playing online games on your PC. If you weren't in that group, then you had to justify the cost of a connection just to play DC games online.

How do you get DTMF and the higher voltage to the DC modem?
PC modems don't usually have the ability to generate a dial tone.

    On a related note...
I was a bit upset when Microsoft stopped supporting Xbox Live for the original Xbox a few years ago. And not just for the original system, no XBL support for the original games on the 360 either! LAME!
I could understand Seganet being discontinued because they no longer made systems and there were not too many online games.
But MS still supports Xbox live. They couldn't spare a few servers for the original Xbox online games? Or find a way to incorporate the old XBL with the new? Why have backwards compatibility for offline only??
    WEAK and LAME, MS!

It doesn't work with all games. I know that Quake III specifically expects the higher voltage, so that doesn't work.

I think I remember reading somewhere that supporting a game on Xbox Live requires allocating physical server resources. I don't think it's just one big collective server farm, it's a little more game-specific than that. I could be wrong about it, but that would explain the need to retire unused servers to reallocate them for newer games.

well i got a little obsessed today and signed up for a free juno account entirely not expecting this to work at all....omg it actually DID work...well sort of...

i put in Quake 3..the modem dialed the local access number and it connected to the internet then it brought me to a screen that said it could not connect to master server.....

so i plopped in starlancer....it connected yet again...but said it was unable to connect to the gamespy server...

i'm not sure if its the internet connection i have or what...i thought i heard that those 2 games were "online forever".....but i digress

anyway, if anyone could shed some light on this issue that would be cool

i would also love to play some starlancer with anyone on here that might be interested....i'll also head over to onlineconsoles.com to see if they have any info.
