The PSP is my choice. Big screen, great button layout, obviously a high quality non-China product, and quite versatile and easy to hack.

    Hrmmmm.....

There are a lot of Linux-based portables out there that can handle MAME, Dingoo, Wiz, Canoo, Pandora, etc.

I can't speak for all of them, but I have a Dingoo A380 and MAME runs decently if you stick to early 80s/90s games that don't require a tremendous amount of processing power.

Anything beyond that and it either chugs or crashes a lot. Though, don't make the same mistake that I did - If you're going to get a Dingoo get the A330. NOT the 380. 330 is open source and there are a lot more emulators out there for it.

Dingoo also handles CPS games REALLY well. Better than MAME. The person who built the CPS emulator for Dingoo optimized it really well.

iOS and Android devices have some pretty solid versions of MAME4ALL going on.

Quality on the Android is mileage-may-vary. Devices obviously scales to what version of Android, what type of CPU and how much RAM the device has.

The newer the Android phone/tablet/game player the better, but even then, who knows.

iPhones/iTouch since around the iPhone 4 generation handle the software really well IMO, and iPads of any Generation also run the stuff really well. You'll need to jailbreak an iOS device to get it on there.

I run MAME on an iPhone 4 and iPad 2 and it's really great.

If you don't like touch screens, pair up an Android or iOS device with a wireless bluetooth controller like iControlpad or iCade and you're set.

Easiest way on any make/model PSP would be to get a light custom firmware (one that boots in active memory but doesn't permanently alter the PSP's flash firmware) to enable homebrew software booting, and the latest version of MAME for PSP (not sure what that is, but Google should be helpful).
