Default Acclaim grows closer to bankrupcy.

I think the end is near for Acclaim. From gamespot.com:

    =====
Acclaim has announced that NASDAQ has issued the company an official 180-day extension (or until January 20, 2004) to bring its stock back up to $1.00 or face delisting from the NASDAQ SmallCap Market. At the deadline, the NASDAQ will determine if the company has met the requirements or if it has at least given indications that it will meet requirements, in which case, NASDAQ will grant an additional 90-day extension.
    ======

Now I know it might sound weird but even with their stocks trading at under $1.00, Acclaim relies on their stocks heavily to keep the company going. If they get delisted, it's over. And the thing is, I don't see any hope of them rising. And when they file bankrupcy, they'll blame the economy or the consoles or whatever. Fact is Acclaim is a terrible company that makes terrible games. The shit they churn out is so cookie-cutter and boring that it wouldn't entertain a person stuck alone on a desert island.

And when people weren't buying their games, what did they do? Put soft-core porn and junior high level swearing into a fucking BIKE GAME! Said game can't sell now for 9.99 new anywhere. They're going bankrupt because (1) They have no talent at all and (2) they make completely boneheaded choices. They put out BMX XXX on the Gamecube, which like it or not, has a user base of people out of the range of that game's target audience. They are clueless as to what the fans want.

I remember when Turok 2 was about to hit. Everyone LOVED Turok for whatever reason. I hated it. It sure was pretty, but it played like shit and was boring. Turok 2 was supposed to be even better and more pretty. Well, 1 out of 2 I guess. Turok 2 was the last game from Acclaim that anyone gave a shit about before it got released. BMX XXX was more of a "Good god they're desperate" type of hype. Turok 2 had ligit hype. And they dropped the ball just like they always did.

And is there another company more guilty of completely botching licenses? I mean, most of the negative stereotype that all movie licensed games suck comes from them. They've made likely over 100 movie-licensed games and I would say 95 or more of them suck. Check them out.

All the Batman games they made sucked.
All the Simpson games they made sucked.
All the Southpark games they made sucked.
Total Recall is typically on the "worst games ever made" list.
All the Wrestling games they've made sucked.

And most of the great games that Acclaim published they didn't even make themselves. Wizards & Warrior for example. This is a company with an uncanny knack for making the best concepts bland. They took made a horrible Lemmings clone and slapped the Simpsons label on it and BAM, Krusty's Fun House, which was boring to the point of Torture.

And of course, they controlled Iguana (still might, who cares), one of the most overhyped developers ever. They churned out some truly awful shit.

Acclaim is dying. Who cares... less bad games in the collections of completist. Hip Hip Horrah.

I hear you on most of that but...

Iguana did NBA Jam on SNES and that definitely did NOT suck

I'll have to ask my mate at Criterion what would happen to them if Acclaim did go under...

    Um... OK.

    13. 69. 5. 27. 65. 69.

Oh wait, I used 69 twice. Replace one of them with "9".

Good luck and remember, you gotta be in it to win it!

Didn't Acclaim publish the SNES version of MK2? (Or was that Allocade?)

They had a lot of crap, but they had some okay games.

Double Dragon 2 for NES (I think '4' was done by Tradewest, so that wouldn't be one)

The wrestling games 16-bit weren't too bad despite button mashing. Then again, that's all there really was.

    Smash TV was okay

Iguana or whatever was involved with Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball...which is just one of the most realistic baseball games ever.

Well it looks like they got their extension...from Gamasutra.com (I would have posted the link but you have to be a member)

    "Acclaim Gets NASDAQ Extension

Acclaim has received a six-month (180 days) extension from NASDAQ to avoid delisting of its stock.

The company has until January 20, 2004 to raise the price of the company's stock to $1 per share or more for at least 10 trading days"

SNES Smash TV is awesome, but as Charlie said Acclaim didn't develop it, they only published it.

If they do go, they won't be missed. No one really cares about their games anymore, except All Star Baseball, which has a small following each year.

An interesting note: Most Genesis games have the SEGA logo on the back of the cart, molded into the plastic. I noticed some carts have a sticker in the same place, with SEGA's logo on it. I removed the sticker, and found Acclaim's logo beneath. I guess they didn't have as much success with the Genny as they planned.
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

I like the Extreme G and All-Star Baseball franchises. Other than those though, I couldn't care less if Ack-lame goes bankrupt.

I'll never forgive Acclaim for holding the WWF license during the key Attitude era and turning out suckfest after suckfest with the WWF logo on it. I am still pissed that I'll never be able to really play Mankind/Taker/Michaels/Hart in a good game without creating them myself.

Is All-Star Baseball the same 'franchise' as the 'Big Hurt' game, only without his name on it?

Basically it's the same franchise, but it's come a LONG way since the SNES days. I've actually played 70+ games of a season thus far in ASB 2004, and still haven't gotten bored with it.

Smash TV was made by Williams, Double Dragon 2 was made by Technos. Acclaim has little more than "MAD LICENSING SKILLZZZ" ^_^

Acclaim is currently trading at $0.68 cents a share. Stick a fork in them. They might get a small bump during the holidays, but not enough to keep them afloat. Once they're delisted, they are finished.

I think they'll be sold... maybe to Microsoft.
