Lightbulb John Romero's Doomy View On Android and Ouya [Slashdot]

An anonymous reader writes "Romero is willing to give Ouya the benefit of the doubt, but he sees it filling a niche for neither gamers nor developers. 'I think it's cool that they're making a platform, but it's not really the answer that's coming from Apple about the next generation of consoles. Developers really want to invoke the spirit of the Apple II, Android isn't the operating system with which to do it,' Romero said. 'There are two platforms: [iOS] makes money [and] is still very programmable, like the Apple II, and then the other is Android, which is a piracy platform, and you're not doing anything new with it.'"

Essentially he's saying that you can't make money on Android-based, only Apple iOS because Android has too much piracy. He said there's no restrictions to selling games on iOS, just have to pay $100 to be a developer. So his first problem is the OUYA is not protected from piracy. His second is that hardware-wise it's pointless because you can run games on your phone or tablet, and pass them to a TV. Or in cases like the Apple TV, run games directly off the set. Controllers are all blue tooth anyway.

There ARE restrictions. Do something Apple doesn't like and you're booted out. If your game's theme isn't approved by Apple, you're out.
