    Default Civ Virgin

So I picked up Civ 4 complete, Civ 5 GOTY and Stronghold in a an amazon deal a little whiles back for 20 bucks.

Got around to playing Civ 5 two days ago.

Played the tutorial campaign to completion straight through and played an entire game, 3500BC-1960AD, last night. (Germans ftw)

Is 4 really worth playing after running through 5 at this point?

Each game in the series has its own unique rules, units, technologies, diplomacy system, etc. Not only is 4 worth playing, so are 2 and 3. You can skip the first and Call to Power.

I love the series and cannot count how many hours I've spent on it. This thread makes me want to start a game right now, but I know if I do, I'll be up all night.

I've put over 250 hours into Civilization V since release. If you like Civ V, you should probably get the expansion, Gods and Kings. It pretty much changes the whole game and adds a bunch of stuff that they stupidly took out of the original release, like religions and espionage.

Install Civ IV, and download the Fall From Heaven mod. It makes it a brand new, totally excellent game.

Are there any graphical mods for Civilization IV that makes it look less awful?

I was used to (and actually liked) the Civilization III graphics. I god used to and now really like the Civilization V graphics. I can't however stand the way that Civ IV looks.

Civ 4 is a different type of Civ game than 5 is for starters. Civ 5 is different in many ways, that game took a different direction from its ancestors as far as game rules and game play goes. I would definitely reccomend giving 4 a go though, its one of the best Civ games imo. Civ 2 is another great game, though its dated as far as AI and graphics go.

The largest difference that Civ 5 has to the other Civ games would have to be the lack of ships [it does effect gameplay] and of course the lack of unit stacking. Unit stacking is a love or hate thing though, personally I prefer it to not being able to stack units. Siege weapons take on a decidedly huge role in fighting enemy stacks of units and defending against them [again its love it or hate it].

I think I've only played Civilization 2, or whichever one was on PSX. I liked it, but never owned and only borrowed it a couple of days before returning it.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

What do you mean by that? There's certainly ships in Civ 5. Do you just mean that Civ IV had a larger selection of them?

Civilization V + Gods & Kings Expansion pack is what I prefer. I would probably pick Civ IV Complete over standard Civ V due to the lack of important features like religion and omissions of some key civilizations (no doubt a way to make that sweet DLC $$$). I have noticed that after playing a standard sized game for an extended period of time the Civ IV game crashes on me. After trying to fix the issue I have noticed a lot of players complaining about still unfixed memory leaks and sloppy programming choices. Don't know how much of this is due to my PC but I CAN tell you that Civ V does not have any of those issues on my computer.

I haven't played Civ IV, but I think units used to require transports when you embarked them onto water. Now they just turn into ships automatically.
