There are a lot of bad and mediocre GG games, but these at least I like...

    Sonic the Hedgehog
    Sonic Chaos
    Sonic Triple Trouble
    Tails' Adventure
    Psychic World
    Crystal Warriors
    Ristar: The Shooting Star
    Columns
    Super Columns
    Bust-A-Move
    Choplifter III
    Super Monaco GP
    Sonic Spinball

    Halley Wars
    Power Strike II
Aleste GG is amazing but way over priced.
G.P. Rider ( More or less Hang On )
Pop Breaker is a pretty cool tank / Puzzle game from Japan

Some of the sports games are fun.

    PGA tour 2
    World Series Baseball '95

    Mortal Kombat II is okay.

I had fun playing it back when I had a a Game Gear.
At the time it was the Cadillac of hand held systems

As far I know there's no region lock outs.
It's a fun system but I think "Personal" gaming system would have been better marketing that 'Portable'.

The Super Wide Gear was nice add on.
It blew the screen size up to 5 inches.

I was never really able to get into the Game Gear, but I found it's versions of Bubble Bobble and Pengo to be very good.

I second that the Super Wide Gear is a pretty cool add on; if a bit on the gargantuan side.

The GG was my first portable back when it launched, and I still contend that its library gives the original Game Boy's a real run for its money, and is better overall than the Lynx's (though one could argue that the best games on the Lynx are better than anything comparable on the GG - Roadblasters comes to mind). Once you get a Master Gear SMS converter, it gets even better. Though it's a bit glitchy, you can even play Phantasy Star on the thing! While the system itself is really a relic at this point, I loved my GG back in the day. I wish I still had my original flat glass model. Cap replacements are not an issue for me.

Anyway, as for my recommenations, they are pretty standard:

    Columns
    Sonic the Hedgehog
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
    Dynamite Headdy
    Shinobi 1 & 2
    Streets of Rage 1 & 2
    Chase HQ
    Ax Battler
    Defenders of Oasis
    Bust-A-Move
    Slider (Skweek)
    Halley Wars

Though obtaining them is costly and difficult, the import GG Aleste games are two of the best available for the system. Gunstar Heroes is also very nice. They are all faster paced but still play well on the GG screen. I also enjoyed the import version of OutRun, but it isn't the best conversion of the game by any stretch of the imagination.

The two GG Aleste games are two of the four best handheld shmups of the pre-GBA era (the other two are Gradius: The Interstellar Assault for GB and R-Type DX for GB/C), but they're so pricey and somewhat hard to find (import only) that I don't think that they are starter titles, no way.

Some of the sports games are fun.

    PGA tour 2
    World Series Baseball '95
I have the first GG World Series Baseball game... it's nice that it has battery save, but otherwise it's pretty bad. I don't know about that one though.

I have Slider... it's okay, but I found myself getting bored fast. I did only play a relatively small number of levels though. Does it get more interesting farther in?

Oh, and Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion are solid, but Legend of Illusion's not as good. Similarly, I actually like the first Sonic game the best of the five, of the five classic-style Sonic games on the GG... though there it's the second one I'd say is worst. Yes, I think Sonic 2 GG is worse than even Sonic Blast. It's just broken on handhelds. Chaos and Triple Trouble are both decent, but they're very, VERY similar games (nearly identical really), and I just don't think that they're quite as good as the first one. They're way too easy too, quite the opposite problem from the second game.

But anyway, yeah, I agree that the first GG Sonic game is the best one. (Tails' Adventure is cool, though, but that's different.)

One other comment though, a lot of people don't like Ax Battler...

I had a lot of fun importing Tails Skypatrol. I beat the game and it's not too bad if you're used to sidescrolling shooters. The last level has a "get as many extra lives as you want/need" trick too. I got it complete in box from Japan ebay for $70 shortly after their disaster. Cart only should be possible to find cheaper.

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.[/quote]

    Here's my suggestions:

Ecco the Dolphin & Ecco: the Tide of Time - I was quite surprised how well these versions played. The music sucks though.

Tempo Jr. - A fun little platformer, but it's way too easy. If you can get it cheap, it might be worth checking out.

Only regional content, not whole games.
Having the Japan system is important for a hardcore fan. Some games show differences between ENG and JPN mode.

Does anyone know where a good complete printable checklist of U.S.-released (and worldwide) SEGA Game Gear games can be found?
I've recently decided to get back into the Game Gear, and a printable checklist would be nice when I'm out shopping at retro game stores to be able to know what I already have.

    Thanks.

It's also on Sonic Gems Collection if you want to play on a bigger screen.

Curiously... Game Gear has at least two Japan-only games whose English translations require English hardware to access. Unusual as that sounds. Actual Japanese residents needed to import to see the effect also.

Puyo Puyo, and Ronald McDonald in Magical World.
    Lum fan.

If you can find it get the Gunstar Heroes port, it's pretty great 8bit rendition of Gunstar Heroes for the Genesis. Only thing is, its a Japanese only release so it will be hard to find.

    Shining Force II.

If you like to explore this game will disappoint you.
If you just want turn based battles,...It does it's job pretty damn well.

I think there are 3 games in the series.
Not all got a U.S. release.

The only Shining Force I know of on the Game Gear is Sword of Hajya, thats the only one that seen a US release.
