Default How to fix or improve the Game Gear's screen?

We all know that the Game Gear was an ok contender to the Game Boy, but its screen was utter crap. After all of these years, is there a way to replace the screen, improve its quality, or heck... even mod it so it doesn't have to be the low-grade crap that Sega made it?

I need to resuscitate my Game Gear!

Seems to me that it would be easier to get another one, they're not too unccommon.

Most screen and sound issues on the GG are due to bad capacitors. If you can solder and such yourself, google the issue and there are many tutorials on what to fix. The screen itself is not the greatest, and can be replaced by newer LCD screens. That's a more difficult fix though.

Using new capacitors and replacing the backlight with LED's helps, and is about the best you can do, within reason. You CAN use a new TFT screen it's not an easy swap and replace like it is for the Nomad. You'd have to build the tv-out mod (or whatever it's actually called), which is no easy feat in itself, to use a new screen. Even then, the way the video out works, the resolution of the games will not show at full screen. To get it roughly the same size as it originally was, you'd need a 5" screen and that would not fit inside the Gamegear case. I have no idea why it does that so hopefully someone can explain the technical reason why.

edit: here's a portable mod that's sort of what you are talking about, but a little more fleshed out with a new case (to hold the 5" screen) and a hardwired sms adapter. The overall idea is the same though.
