Default Collecting community article on 1up.com

I spent about a week of my off-time working on this piece for 1up.com, giving a brief history of the classic game collecting community from the late 80s to now. Obviously Digital Press features prominently, as does Atariage and a few other sites. I'm pleased with how it came out, and if you've either not been around all that long and are curious, or just want a nostalgic rush, take a look!

    Nice work, ubersaurus!

I was around for most of the history you wrote about it, so it was a nice trip down memory lane, both as a gamer and a collector.

I didn't notice the lack of Atari activity here lately, but after your article, I realized there is quite a bit less. Maybe it's time to pull out the ol' 2600!

Nice article. I can't claim to be a 2600 collector at all, but it's very interesting to learn about the early days of the collecting community. I feel fortunate to have witnessed and played a small role in the NES collecting community as it was just beginning to take off, back when we all only had Mike Etler's rarity list to refer to, browsing nested memory boards all on one page, tons of fan sites, using eBay and Google for the first time, etc. etc.

Nice read. Brings me back to the "good old days". The one thing I love about the VCS, it was a system that had a huge library of two-player games. I love playing games with someone. Games like Maze Craze, Indy 500, Slot Racers, Fall Down, Warring Worms 2, etc. will never get old. They were a blast 30 years ago and are a blast now. Atari has aged extremely well, way better than other "newer" systems.

I thought DP's store opened in 2006-7? I may be wrong, but I thought it opened after 2005.

According to [ http://www.digitpress.com/images/store/ ], the store opened on November 26, 2005 which is probably why you thought it opened in 2006.

Writing that article made me really want to play my Atari games, I will say. I mean, I keep the 7800 out, but it hadn't gotten any play in a while. Today I was counting the hours to get home from work to play Kaboom!

Timeless classics abound on that machine, as well as some weirdo not-so-classic ones.

That was a really great read; it made me want to sort out my old Atari gear. I think I'll do that this weekend, actually.

Great article! I've been collecting old video games since they were new, but I didn't really know any other hardcore collectors until I discovered Digital Press in the early 1990s. I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one who still had his Atari, ColecoVision, etc. still hooked up, and I was truly stunned to find out how valuable certain titles were.
