Question What horror themed games do you have in your backlog?

In the spirit of October, I'm going to try to put dent in some of the horror games I have in my backlog.

I just finished Silent Hill 2 on the XBOX360 version of Silent Hill HD Collection. I started a game of SH3 on the same collection, but I don't want to invest too much time replaying games that I've beaten (the PS2 version) when I have a massive backlog of other games, especially horror themed one.

My question is, what horror games do you have in your backlog, and how about trying to get some of the out of the way before Halloween? The first snow started falling here a few days ago, and it gets dark really early now in the Midwest, so it's peak for horror games. It's a lofty goal, but I'd like to try to get 3 more horror games finished before the 31st.

Anyone else doing horror games for October?

I've got a copy of Silent Hill (PS1) I've been sitting on for almost 10 years. Maybe I should take a stab at it finally.

Yes, you absolutely should! And you should slap yourself, post haste, for allowing a GEM like that to sit unplayed for that long.

The original Silent Hill, XBLA port of SotN, Clock Tower 2, probably more I forget.
For modern stuff I still need to play Alan Wake, Dead Rising 1 and 2:OTR, and Castlevania; LoS.

Splatterhouse 2 as well for me, I know I beat Splatterhouse 3, so that technically isn't "Backlog" right? I definitely want to beat the 2nd one though!

I'm sure there are a few I should be planning on playing through in October, but my main goal is to beat my recently acquired copy of Midnight Mutants for the Atari 7800. After all, someone has to save Grampa Munster!

    Oh, and 1,000th post!

Does Dino Crisis count as 'horror'? I' picked it up a few weeks ago, and I played a bit of it and kinda liked it.

I suppose I could throw in PS2 Fatal Frame, if I can find time to start it...or maybe Ghouls & Ghosts, or Ghosts & Goblins on Capcom Classics Collection on my PS2 arcade cab setup.

    Lets see. Theres:

    Cold Fear
    Doom 3: Resurrection
    Silent Hill 2, 3, 4, Homecoming
    Left 4 Dead 2
    FEAR Files
    FEAR 2, 3
Resident Evil 4, Code Veronica: X
    Devil May Cry 1, 2, 3, 4

I'm sure there are more. But atleast I have played games in the Doom, Silent Hill, L4D, FEAR and RE series. I just haven't had a chance to play all of them.

I don't really play games for the theme of the year, but coincidentally, Yakuza Dead Souls finally dropped down in price to $20 after shipping through Play-Asia(US version) so I purchased it. I originally preordered it at Deep Discount for $36 but after over a month of waiting and not receiving the game, I cancelled the preorder. As luck would have it, or bad luck I might say, two days later, some people I know receive emails saying it shipped, so I refused to get it until I got it for $20 even though I've really wanted to play it for the longest time.

So I just bought the game last week, but Play Asia and their ridiculously long shipping times, being located in Hong Kong and all, will probably take another two weeks to get to me. So it'll be late in the month before I can play it.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

Uh, all of them? If you really want to stretch the meaning of a "horror game", I guess I've played through some, but I haven't really played any traditional horror game. They're more in my collection for other people to play and enjoy. I like watching horror games (and horror movies), but playing horror games usually makes me feel too uncomfortable because I get really immersed when I'm actively playing.

But if it counts for anything, I'm playing through the 3D remake of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood on PSP right now. Didn't even make the mental connection with Halloween (which I've barely celebrated at all since my mid teens), but I suppose it appropriate for October.

I suppose I was talking about any games that have horror themes, Aussie2B. Not just the traditional survival horror genre. Basically anything with a dark, horror'esque vibe. And I'm the same way kupomogli, I get really immersed in horror games. It's why I love them so much. Some of them (Silent Hill series, Dead Space series, Fatal Frame series) I have to just put the controller down and back the hell away for awhile.

At any rate, I have a ton of horror games in the blacklog that are either unplayed, or unfinished:

    • Baroque
    • Blood Rayne 2
    • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    • Castlevania, II: Simon's Quest, III: Dracula's Curse, Super IV, Aria of Sorrow, Bloodlines, Circle of the Moon, Curse of Darkness, Harmony of Dissonance, Symphony of the Night, X
    • Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within, Clock Tower 3
    • Cold Fear
    • Condemned: Criminal Origins, 2: Bloodshot
    • Cursed Mountain
    • D2
    • Darkwatch
    • Darkness, The
    • Dino Crisis, 3
    • Dead Rising 2
    • Dementium, II
    • Devil May Cry, 2, 3, 4
    • Dr. Chaos
    • FEAR
    • Echo Night, Echo Night: Beyond
    • Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
    • Fatal II: Crimson Butter Fly, III: The Tormented
    • Galerians, Galerians: Ash
    • Ghouls 'N Ghosts (Super), Ultimate
    • Ghosthunter
    • Grabbed by the Ghoulies
    • Kuon
    • Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Maximo vs. Army of Zin
    • Nightmare Creatures, II
    • Monster Party
    • Obscure, Obscure: Aftermath
    • Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
    • Parasite Eve, II
    • Plants vs. Zombies
    • Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ
    • Resident Evil, 0, 2, 3: Nemesis, Deadly Silence, Operation Raccoon City, Outbreak, Umbrella Chronicles
    • Rule of Rose
    • Silent Hill 4: The Room, Homecoming, Origins, Shattered Memories
    • Siren
    • Splatterhouse, 2, 3, Splatterhouse (remake)
    • Suffering, The, Suffering, The 2: The Tied that Bind
    • Tecmo's Deception, Kagero: Deception 2, Trapt
    • Typing of the Dead, The

Whenever folk classify Castlevania, Devil May Cry, or Bloodrayne as "horror themed games" I get confused. Supernatural monsters all by themselves do not immediately equal horror. By that logic, the Twilight books are "horror themed" because they feature vampires. Kinda dumb.

Horror in games is about atmosphere and player agency. Games like Siren, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame are definitely horror games because the player never feels safe: the mechanics allow you survive and progress but dont necessarily endow you with confidence or a feeling of mastery or power. The world in this kind of game is largely designed to accentuate that feeling of helplessness and discomfort. Contrast that with Devil May Cry, where you're an all powerful demon murdering machine that talks like a ninja turtle. You see the difference.

Back on topic, I'm going to try my best to finally play through Call of Cthulhu in PC. I've never been able to force my way through the third level.

You're probably equating horror to some measure with how macho you are rather than the actual content. Titles like Devil May Cry and the others you named are dark, atmospheric games with score of demons, monsters, haunted castles, and supernatural creatures trying to kill you around every corner. That's pretty horrific in itself, but they're also laden with extreme and graphic scenes of violence and gore.

Dark games which are more action based than physiological are still horror, they just don't scare or unsettle you as much, and you may be somewhat jaded at this point, truthfully. King Kong (the 1933 one) is considered a horror film, but it seemed more like a kids film to me when I first saw it, because I was so jaded growing up when I did.

Horror in games is about atmosphere and player agency. Games like Siren, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame are definitely horror games because the player never feels safe: the mechanics allow you survive and progress but dont necessarily endow you with confidence or a feeling of mastery or power. I see the difference between SURVIVAL horror games, like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, and EXTREME ACTION horror games like Devil May Cry. But at the end of the day, they're all still horror. One just unsettles you a lot more than the other, and puts you in the role of the 'victim', where as the others puts you in the role of sadistic anti-heros, or a capable warrior of some type.

I haven't read the Twilight books, but I understand them to be fantasy romance. I don't think that's really on par with blood and guts games like Devil May Cry where every supernatural creature and person you encounter (most of which are disturbing in appearance) is actually trying to kill you, rather than court and have consensual sex with you. I've seen the first Twilight film (unfortunately), and it's not even night time for most of the movie, and the fucking vampires glisten in the sunlight. I get that Devil May Cry isn't 'scary' to you, but come on, man.

Hmm, I might take this Haloween season to finally play a translated emulated version of Sweet Home for NES (wish they actually released the actual game n the US). It always looked great but I have never been in the mood to play it. I also have Resient Evil 0 for Gamecube collecting dust that I need to beat.
