    Started playing The Blair Witch for PC a while back on my old computer... scary as hell. Never installed it on my current computer, but now would be a good time if I can find it again. Also, never finished Playstation games Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver 2, or Blood Omen 2, so I'll most likely give one of those a try again. Oh yeah, and then there's Medievil II... it just didn't pull me in like the first one did, but it's worth giving it another shot this Halloween.

    Only got so far in Thief: The Dark Project, too. Though strictly not a horror game, it does have some spooky parts.

    You know, I mentioned the Blair Witch games but I ended up buying the entire Blackwell series on GOG last week. I'd only played through part one, but I just went through parts two and three, and am working on the fourth. Not exactly a horror series, though it does deal with ghosts.

    Seriously, play these games. The writing starts out a bit weird in part one but things improve a lot from part two onwards (despite part three changing the mechanics a bit.)

    If anyone here is a fan of Silent Hill, I'd recommend "Lone Survivor" for PC. it's a 2d take on horror that takes the best ideas from Silent Hill 1 through 3 and adds a weird indie vibe to the mix. It's cheap and runs on basically anything. I had a lot of fun with it, and I thought it was a little overlooked.

    Many of the games I play feature some element of horror. I enjoy playing Unreal Tournament. It isn't what most would consider a scary game, but imagine how horrific it would be to be stuck in a futuristic tournament in which you must kill your peers or be killed.

    I recently re-installed old id Software games featuring creepy medieval settings, such as Heretic and Hexen. It's not uncommon to get spooked playing those games, but are they horror games?

    I guess one game that definitely fits the bill is Resident Evil 1, if for no other reason than its reputation as one of the most influential (and successful) 'survival horror' games ever made.

    I forgot all about Resident Evil... yes, I may need to dig that out as well! And yes, I think Heretic & Hexen count as horror... which reminds me, I also never finished any of the original Doom series... forget Doom 3, my computer doesn't meet the specs for it. But I think out of all the games I have, that's the one I'd like to play most right now, and that definitely counts as horror in my book!

    Silent Hill.

    I played the game briefly when it came out. I liked it but never ended up buying it. Mainly because I didn't get a PlayStation 1 until later on. I'm trying to grab it right now since it would make a good game to play this month.

    Yes, it would... I only played it briefly myself, but I loved the music & atmosphere of the game. I don't know why I never ended up getting it.

    Yeah. I was actually managing electronics at Target at the time. I played it during some down time at work on a demo system. I've always wanted to play it night on a surround sound system. Won a bid on a copy today, so it looks like I'm going to be making myself very uneasy pretty soon here.

    Hell yes! I don't have a surround sound system, so I always play these types of games with headphones & the sound way up.

    I must have a bunch of horror games that I haven't played, only a few come to mind at the moment though.

    Darkseed
    Shivers 1+2
    Gabriel Knight games

    I'm mostly thinking of PC games, I also have a bunch that were already mentioned earlier in the thread.

    The week of Halloween I intend to play an marathon of horror themed games from the NES to Playstation. For this it doesn't matter if the game is flawed gameplay wise as in Friday the 13th, it's about the revisiting those older gems that just so happen to strongly embrace Halloween elements. My list would include: Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Monster Party, Castlevania (of course), Zombies at my Neighbors, Resident Evil (GC remake), and more.

    I could only really do this after getting other things like Grad school and work out of the way.

    I used to do that. I would play the games just for the atmosphere. This year I won't have much else to do so I might as well dig out some of my old Playstation games & see what I will have lined up for the week of Halloween. I'll come back and post my picks & maybe I'll remember a couple of others I couldn't think of before.

    Prepare for some frustration, especially with Darkseed.

    As for me... I now have the GnG trilogy twice over since I now own Capcom Generation 2 for Saturn. (Now if only I had an Action Replay...)

    I *almost* picked up Quake for Saturn, but decided to pass it over because I didn't really like the PC original.

    Ok here's what I was able to find. I just recently moved & my collection is scattered all over the place. Some of the games may still be packed away in boxes. Oh well...

    Some of these have been mentioned already, of course, but I will include a note about each one so I'm not being entirely redundant.

    PSP

    Medievil: Resurrection
    - Forgot I had this. As a matter of fact, I forgot it even existed!

    PS1

    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    - My all-time fave. This has everything, and the music is superb (I actually bought the soundtrack a while back)

    Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - Love the medieval setting, and also very atmospheric. I never got very far in it, so this year I'm gonna try harder... maybe I'll look up some gameplay tips.

    Medievil - I have a hankering to play this again this year. Love the atmosphere.

    Doom - I know I have this somewhere where I can find it if I really take the time to search. And I think it included Doom 2 as well? I may be misremembering.

    PS2

    Blood Omen 2
    - Yes! So glad this isn't one of the games I still have packed away. If I get frustrated with Blood Omen 1 I'll switch to this.

    Soul Reaver 2 - Doesn't really say Halloween to me as much as the two Blood Omen games, despite the whole being the ghost of a vampire thing, but I may discover differently when I start playing it again, and as you will soon see, my options are limited this year...

    Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds - Forgot all about this one! I'm a big Buffy fan, and I remember having a lot of fun with this one. So this is probably one of the first ones I'm gonna wanna play.

    Castlevania: Lament of Innocence - I just can't seem to get the hang of using that damned whip, so there's one part I haven't been able to get past. I think it may have something to do with my controller buttons sticking. Maybe with a new controller I'd do better. Anyway, gonna give it one more try this year, just because, again, beautiful Gothic horror atmosphere!

    I know I had Resident Evil but who knows where that is now. I still remember how scary it was when that mutant that kept saying "STAAAARRRRSSS" broke out and started chasing me down the hall! I sure wasn't expecting that! Really got my heart pounding. Which one was that? Resident Evil 2?

    Anyway, that's it... depressingly few titles are available to me right now. But I guess that's a good thing in a way, because I'll be more motivated to progress further in the games I have before me instead of just giving up and moving on to another one.

    That sounds more like Resident Evil 3 actually...

    I wasn't expecting to get into a horror mood. But by happenstance I got my mitts on Ghouls'n Ghosts for Sega Genesis and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for PS1. And I've been playing the hell out of them. Then, after getting quite far in Castlevania I decided to buy Castlevania Rondo of Blood on Turbographics Virtual Console. So I've been playing that since last night. Its much more similar to the NES Castlevanias. Which I both love... and hate. Bosses are assholes.

    Holloween horror themed question; who'd win in a fight Ghost'n Goblin's Arthur? Or Castlevania's Simon Belmont?

    Capcom and Konami should team up and do a crossover game between the franchises for the awesome.

    Hmmmm, good question.

    I can only answer by providing a breakdown.

    ARTHUR'S ABILITIES (as per the original Ghosts n' Goblins)
    * shoots really fast
    * pretty nimble movement
    * can't change direction in midair, but CAN turn and fire backwards
    * can have up to two projectiles on screen at once (three if its the knife)
    * one weapon--the shield--can deflect enemy projectiles

    ARTHUR'S WEAKNESSES
    * He can only take two hits before croaking

    SIMON'S ABILITIES (as per the original Castlevania)
    * can take several hits before croaking
    * has an upgradeable whip that can sometimes block projectiles
    * has a variety of secondary weapons that he can fire as long as he has hearts, these include ones similar to Arthur's weapons as well as a time-stop spell.

    SIMON'S WEAKNESSES
    * flies backwards whenever he's hit.
    * moves slowly
    * jumping is really stiff.

    Okay, so that looks like its really biased in favor of Arthur... but is it really? After all, Simon has shown he can kill enemies that are much faster than him (those damned hunchbacks, anyone?) and the fact that Arthur can only take two hits may give Simon the edge.

    It surprises me how even this battle really is. Arthur could win by sheer firepower, but Simon could win by sheer endurance, even absent of all other tactics or strategy.

    ... the only thing to do is make a game out of this.
