every thread i've ever read about this says go with the billy bookcases from IKEA. I'm currently saving up for one...unless someone here mentions something better.

Hardware store, 2x4s, plywood. You can make your own shelf to any size or shape you enjoy most! The best and most reliable shelving is the one you build yourself...

    ...but not with plywood :/

If you're gonna make your own, at least use pine. Plywood is probably about the worst thing for shelves like this. It's not meant to bear any weight in that way and will just sag over time.

I went with the Billy shelves based on reading about them here and they are great.

I agree with this. The cost of these bookshelves is so low and the quality is pretty decent that when all is said and done, unless you've got the time and inclination to make something custom in a better style they are hard to beat.

My one complaint is that they're a bit deeper than really needed for many CD/DVD games. However, with a bit of customization they fit Sega CD and Saturn games excellently. Also, the recessed notch on the lower back of them to accommodate trim and sit flush against the wall is quite nice.

Yeah I was in IKEA a few weeks ago and the Billy cases look perfect - They aren't expensive either, I plan on picking up a bunch of them for a wall unit in my future game room.

Well my closet is going to be my entertainment center so I need an idea for a shelving system to hold my systems.
