I remember reading in Nintendo Power Asmik wanted to turn it into a franchise.
And yet I think it turned out to be the last game they released in North America.

(what's more awesome about Xardion is that the Japanese version will try to boot directly into a save game if it exists. Forgot all that BS they put into game intros like publisher logos and um... title screens. )

I think the SNES version is the one I've got...and even if it's the worst version, it's still a good game!

Seriously. The first game was good. Not Contra or Konami Tiny Toons good, but hardly the crapfest everyone makes it out to be.

    (The second one, though... *shudder*)

i actually liked bubsy for genesis, i have fond memories of gliding halfway across the screen from the carnival/roller coaster level

    Some of the SNES examples:

Blanka Stage - Decent sounding wind flute.
Vega stage - Decent sounding brass section. It represents the spanish culture well.
Guile stage - Decent sounding trumpets and a snappy bass.
Ken Stage - Decent sounding trumpets and a good wind section.
Chun Li - Nice sounding wood flutes and wood xylophone
Dalsim - Good wind section and a decent sounding Balbu Tarang.
Introdutory/defeat screens - solid sounding trumpets.

You'll notice that the Street Fighter Alpha series has hardware that is capable of reproducing real instrument sounds, and its featured in those games.

That's fine if the music is actually intended to sound that way. The problem with a lot of SNES ports is that simple sounds often get replaced with farting trumpets and wah-wah sounds that sound out of place in the composition.
It's also worth noting that the 16-bit ports of SF games are missing the high damage background music, and just use a change of tempo instead.

There's one thing Bubsy definitely has going for it; it's not Zool 2.

Some SNK fanboy you are, then.

Fatal Fury only had three characters in the arcade... and it had horrible controls there too. :P At least you could play as the CPU characters in VS. mode in the SNES one (I never played the Genesis one.)

In the case of Street Fighter II, the CPS1 soundtrack is trying to replicate real instruments, but the hardware isn't capable of doing it. You can listen to Guile's stage and the electonic hum of what is supposed to be a trumpet. What really sounds out of place for me, is the song that they used in Vega's stage. The trumpet sounds like it should for a mariachi band, but the violin section in the background doesn't fit the musical instruments of that culture.

The farting trumpets, as you say, is what real trumpets sounds like when you play it at its lowest range. Vega's stage has a lot of staccatto, with the notes being near the lowest range of a trumpet.

Here's a real trumpet perfoming staccatto notes.

You guys dissin' Fatal Fury 1... don't know what yer talkin' about. It's teh awesome.

I say that with no hint of nostalgia--I first played it via the Battle Archives on PS2.

And I still have the Pao Pao Cafe music stuck in my head.

I'm not dissing it. I had fun with the game back in '92 and again in Battle Archives. But man the SNES version is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

So I've heard. Fatal Fury without line-switching... that would be like Mortal Kombat without fatalities. No, it would actually be worse.

Then again, I've heard that all home ports of Neo-Geo games were pretty terrible save for the PC-Engine ones (Fatal Fury 2 I can confirm first-hand made the transition well. Just with long-ass loading times)

The Genesis version isn't the greatest port either, but it's fun and arguably plays better than the NeoGeo original. Two of the bosses didn't make the cut, but the ones that did make it have expanded movesets and can be used in VS mode.
I like the audio as well, even if some of the voices sound ridiculous (Terry's "warm beef" and Geese's "it's splurgin'!" come to mind.)

What's wrong with Mark of the Wolves for the Dreamcast?

Nevermind, that was a stupid question. I can't delete this post.

Allow me to facepalm... I was thinking specifically of 16-Bit Neo-Geo ports and completely forgot that Neo-Geo was still alive in the Dreamcast era.

KOF 99 Evolution is also quite good.

Well, after I had posted that, I realized that the discussion was about the 16-bit ports.

I picked up Bubsy for the Genesis in a lot awhile ago, mostly because it came with Flashback and Micro Machines. Still haven't played it at all, all I've ever heard is it's mediocre to awful.

Xardion is mediocre to awful...there are some flashes of brilliance and some neat ideas but most of them are wasted on the exposition, instead of the actual game. Boo

I don't have a problem with only having 3 characters in the normal mode, being this was the way the game was originally designed. The Japanese version is a lot nicer better when it comes to controls than it's English counterpart.

You've also misunderstood me; the SNES port only allows 2P to use the bosses. Possibly the most retarded design decision I've ever seen in a Takara port.

Speaking of ridiculous, I got up to a point in Xardion where I jumped down off a building...level end is right past me...and I can't exit the area! Can't jump back either. Argh! Don't see a way to get back to the map (yeah, I'm in the item collection phase) and don't see a way to save progress, or even get killed so I can restart the area. Lol! Might have to bust out Cheat Engine and alter my position...this is pretty bad.

Edit: Strange! Resetting the emulator and choosing "continue" lets you continue. This game continues to freak me out for the wrong reasons.

    Edit #2: Aaand done. Trippy.
