I noticed there's a guy out there who has built a nes clone from scratch. Pretty amazing stuff. It seems a little pricey though. But having NES with RGB out and improved audio would be great.

Looks interesting - although I wonder why he's showing the game off in the wrong aspect ratio. Edit: I also wonder why he's showing off S-Video instead of RGB (but I guess he just bought the RGB encoder but doesn't have RGB stuff, and so runs S-Video output). It looks good enough though (the output, not the handheld camera work...please set it on a stack of books or something next time, please!) and you don't get S-Video without RGB so that's not a bad improvement.
Been a while since I heard about the Tristar / Super 8...they didn't have a good reputation years ago, but if they are closely compatible with the original system they might make a better starting point for this kind of mod than a one-chip.

Here's a link to the project over at Atari Age

Looks interesting.
I think the main hurdle for a good NES clone is actually the choice of video outputs - the RGB PPU has color issues (not to mention RGB mods are destroying PlayChoice arcade boards and the stock of even those is drying up), and the standard NTSC chip is composite only. I think the best thing that could be done would be to create an all-new video chip. I think some people have already done this, using an fPGA (example).
It's a nice project, he's doing updates and q&a for a few days or longer now over at nintendoage for it. I'm not sure how far it's going to go with purchases though as he has some stiff competition coming this year. Retrousb is converting away from doing repro games and into doing hardware modification and they're working on HDMI-NES, a fat upgrade for top loaders currently and the couple pics up in the thread over there are insanely sharp and clean with amazing pop to the colors.
