Default Revenge of the Ninja (Sega CD)

Got this game today... sadly, my copy turned out to have a fatal nick, so I have to replace the disc. Manual and case are in fine condition.

It's an awesome game. Like Dragon's Lair: the Anime.

Now... did anyone actually beat this game on Hard, AND mail in to get that diploma that Renovation advertised? I'd like to see a picture of it because it sounds awesome.

Is this the same laserdisc game that taito released in the arcades or is it something unique?

This is one I never played back in the day, but most of the anime based sega cd fmv games are pretty cool.

I believe so. Casual research turns up that it was also known as "Ninja Hayate" and in Japan, you can buy it on the Saturn and PSOne (in a bundle with Time Gal)

Unfortunately that bundle is ridiculously expensive--better to just buy the Sega CD ones.

    Revenge of the Ninnnjaaaaaaa.

Such an awesome fmv game. I love the 80s anime style and soundtrack. The game is also quite humorus at times. My friends and i played this one for weeks until my buddy jonny had it mastered.

I had forgot about the mail in diploma.

It's so amusing that all of the laserdisc arcade ports OTHER THAN Dragon's Lair and Space Ace on SegaCD are excellent albeit it low-color depth.

    [edit] Revenge of the Ninja
    Time Gal
    Road Avenger
    Cobra Command

Limitations of the hardware considered, are all highly playable.

Dragon's Lair and Space Ace? YEARS away from even being passable. (Thank GOD we've gotten to a place where the home versions are all arcade perfect.)

Is "Mark" another game or did you mean "Revenge"?

The game store has an import version of Road Avenger... I'd buy it if I knew how to make Mega CD games play on an American unit.

(Also, what's a good home console port of Dragon's Lair I and II and Space Ace? Knowing my luck they'll turn out to be for consoles I don't own)

*whoops* Sorry, edited your post instead of mine. Sorry about that! Fixed.

    Yeah, meant revenge.

God, there's too many games with Ninja in the title.

As far as the Don Bluth stuff goes ...

    The Blu-Ray releases are good.

The PC ports of the HD remasters from about 4 years ago are good.

The iOS ports are good, the DS and PSP versions are good.

The Wii collection is very good and only hampered by the Wii's lack of true HD output.

IMO the best home ports of Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II can be found on PS3 via the PSN.

    Here's my review: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/show...MERGED-UPDATED

I know Digital Leisure brought Dragon's Lair to the 360 on XBLA with Kinect support, and that's as good as the PS3 version but I'm not sure if it sold well enough for them to do Space Ace or Dragon's Lair II.

So, if you want the full experience on a console in HD, the PS3 has all the games at the present time.

Me neither, but Road Avenger holds a certain place in my heart, it'll be good to give this a try if I can find it.

If you're a fan and you have an iPad or an iPhone there's a really great HD remaster of Road Blaster.

Has both swipe and tilt controls. The controls are a bit of a pain in the ass to master on the touch screen, but once you do it's immensely playable.

I actually managed to play all the way through the sega cd version of dragons lair back in the day.

I have the Blu ray, but it's a lot harder! The levels come in random order so you can't really practice them. If you die, it just brings up a different scene and you don't get a chance to fix your mistakes.

    Yes. Just like the arcade!

Sounds like I'm gonna have to settle for the DVD versions or else one of the earlier console/PC ports. No Blu-Ray player, no PS3 on my end.

EDIT: Say, what exactly is wrong with the Sega CD versions of the Don Bluth games? I know video compression will be an issue, but what's this about playability? (most of my experience with Dragon's Lair is from the ReadySoft MS-DOS CD-ROM, which... I liked it. If the Sega CD version is similar to that, I'll be happy enough).

    How good does that look?

I am on Andriod though, unfortunately, and I can't see it in the Google Play store. Bah!

The SegaCD and pretty much all of the platform releases PRIOR TO the Blu-Ray (and the DAPHNE Project on PC) have the following problems, I'll try to list them from least important to most important:

    • Video compression rates (varies per game)
    • Inaccurate audio effects (ambient audio, transferred analog audio from the LD, "correct/incorrect" move sound effects) vs. the arcade
    • Accuracy/authenticity of moves in each room vs. the arcade
    • Timing of moves in each room vs. the arcade
    • Accuracy of branching order of rooms in the castle "structure" vs. the arcade
    • Edited sequences, often cut from the game to accommodate limited space on the media
    • Missing rooms vs. the arcade

In this day and age if you're going to play a home version of Dragon's Lair, you should really go with something arcade authentic. There's no shortage of them out there and as challenging as the game is to play it's a much better experience with a modern version.

Do you have a Wii or DS? Both the Wii collection and the DS game are arcade authentic in every aspect other than the compression rate of the video, and it IS good on the Wii, it's just not AS good as the PS3/360/PC HD versions.

-OR- if you have access to the 20th anniversary DVD box set (ONLY THIS ONE WILL WORK)

you can download the DAPHNE laserdisc emulator for PC and it will unlock your legal right to use the arcade "laserdisc image" files.

The DAPHNE emulator is the absolute most arcade authentic experience as it directly emulates the Laserdisc CPU and uses an specially parsed MPEG of a direct transfer of the laserdisc (or HD image file from the Blu-Ray if you want to go that route).

    http://www.daphne-emu.com/site3/index_hi.php

and the companion software that grabs all of the currently (allowed) other games that work with the emulator
