Did anyone here ever have The SEGA Channel? How about an XBAND modem for the SNES/Genesis?

I remember a friend of mine had the channel for a short time; what an interesting concept! Way ahead of its time.

Another friend had an XBAND modem for his SNES; I remember playing Super Street Fighter II against someone, but it's a very vague memory.


Anyone have any special memories of either or both of these?

My buddy that lived across the street from me had the Sega Channel. Pretty cool when it worked, but that wasn't every often (the problem was with our shitty cable, not Sega), he cancelled it after a couple months.

I used to wake up at 6 am EST on the 1st of every month to see the games change over when I was 5-6 years old, can you guess how much I loved Sega Channel?

I had the sega channel and it was a blast in it's day.It's monthly fee was $14.95 and you had 50 games to chose from.It was very convenient as well since it let me play any game,that i never played before.It's other bonus playing games that were japan exclusive such as Mega Man Wily Wars,Pulseman,Golden Axe 3 etc.The Sega channel even let you play up and coming titles before it hit retail.

That's what I seem to remember from the SEGA Channel; there were demos of upcoming games available and a huge library of Genesis games to pick and play, and some I'd never heard of. Like I said, what a neat concept. You can't do that on Nintendo!

I don't recall the SEGA channel ever being available in my hometown. We weren't Time Warner, it was Comcast.

I remember the Sega Channel quite fondly.

For us small-town kids at the time, it was a pretty solid deal - $14.95/month for 50 games, including imports, obscure titles, RPGs (which were almost always rented out at the local video stores), and stuff we never would have had the chance to try otherwise.

True, we didn't own the games, but neither did we if we rented them, and it beat the pants off of $2/2-day rentals for one game.

if not for Sega Channel, I would never have gotten to try Pulseman (and buy the Japanese MD version many years later). I'm glad it eventually got a Virtual Console release, so more people can see what a fun game it is... because, Gawds, the eBay price now...

I wish I still had some of the stuff from the art contest I won way back when... or at least a T-shirt.
