Default Fake version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure?

Many, many, many years ago, I obtained a C64 emulator (I think it was C64S) with a number of bundled games, including something that referred to itself as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I did not end up playing it very much, as it was a horribly sparse and limited game – probably cobbled together in BASIC – and seemed to bear little resemblance to what I could find described in some UHS files I had come across.

It was only recently that I came across a reference suggesting that this was a known "bootleg" version, but Googling fails to turn up any references as to who knows about this game or how it might have originated. Perhaps I am Googling for the wrong terms?

Gamebase shows there is a sort of non-commercial version that is not the famous Infocom game.

Ahh, that explains it. It's the "Supersoft" version, by one Bob Chappell.

    Such an awesome awesome game.

While you are looking for the bootleg version be aware that an official Hitchhikers 2 beta was discovered and released on the net a few years back. It is unfinished but if you are a fan of the game it is worth exploring.
