Default Alright... how do you open a PS2?

I have the gamebit set but I can't seem to find a screw to unscrew or anything to pop the top off. Anyone know what to do here?

You do not need a gamebit set.

It is different from version to version. It also depends as to whether or not you want to just get the cover off, or totally disassemble the PS2.

It's far too involved for me to type it all. Pop off the black square plastic caps. Do a Google search. Remember where the long screws went and the short screws, and pull the cover off slow and gentle, watching for the ribbon cable. You tear that free, and unless you are VERY handy, or very lucky, it's SONY refurb time.

Good luck. I am very good with PS2's (repaired more than 50), and I know enough that you need to take great care. Half of those 50 were further broken by the owners attempts at disassembly. They are like a laptop inside.

    oof...

I simply need to get to the CD tray, which has something jamming it, or has gone off the track. But thank you for helping me with the first step. I'm pretty good with computers so I hope it will translate over well.

Egads, if I typed everything I knew that can possibly go wrong, and how to troubleshoot it, I could literally write a book.

I do actually. I do repairs professionall for local game stores, video stores, and rent to own places. Business has grown beyond what I ever anticipated.

I once also tried to open my ps2 to see how hard it would be to even reach the spot to mod the ps2, and I also never figured out how to open the damned thing, and I myself eventually just gave up.

Unless you are at a tech level where you are at least confortable disassembling a computer (totally) and re-assembling it from memory, I recommend staying out of your PS2. Unless it is very broken, and you don't care about getting it fixed economically.

Many of the online instructions are for specific versions (they don't always mention that) and some parts can be very easily knocked out of adjustment. If you don't mark the adjustment point of certian parts before touching them, you can be assured it will never read another disc.

I am of the opinion they were specifically designed to be difficult to service.
