    Default Favorite Ghostbusters game?

Who you gonna call? You know. Those guys. One of the greatest comedies of our time. A movie that is embedded into our pop culture and as a result has spawned numerous video games. Which was the best though? The original game by Activision is quirky, but not without it's problems (especially considering the different ports). Then there's "The Real Ghostbusters" arcade game by Data East, a fun but slightly repetitive co-op romp!

There have been a number of releases across a multitude of platforms. From the Sega made and often overlooked Genesis game to the 2009 Ghostbusters: The Video Game which kind of served as an official sequel to the Ghostbusters 2 movie, which is your favorite Ghostbusters title? And please... do go on!

As far as the David Crane classic, I think the SMS version of that game is the best all-around. Best graphics, good music rooted in the Master System's charming synths, and a great final sequence with Stay Puft and a battle with Gozer.

The Data East arcade game (ported to Amiga) is a fun 3 player dungeon crawl though it's a bit of a grind/repetitious to plod through.

I LOVE the GameBoy/Famicom "new" Ghostbusters II game with the Chibi-styled busters. Always a go-to game when I bust out a GameBoy or emulate.

The Genesis game is also a lot of fun. Also semi-Chibi style stuff, good controls, nice stylized graphics.

And, of course, while it's not classic/retro the recent Atari published Ghostbusters game which does for all intents and purposes serve as cannon sequel to the events of the first two films was everything that a Ghostbusters fan could have hoped for (relatively speaking). I can't find much to complain about with that game. Great graphics, good play control, really cool ghost hunting/trapping mechanics. Awesome stuff.

I hadn't considered that Ghostbusters has a pretty decent history of licensed releases, but, even in the face of some stinkers and bad versions of multiplatform releases, it does have some winners/classics.

Sega Genesis and New Ghostbusters II

for some reason I'm a little baffled as of why Winston keeps failing to make it into the older games

Genesis Ghostbusters is probably the best-made ghostbusters game if you don't care about faithfulness to the license, but if you do, new ghostbusters II slightly edges over. I personally prefer GENbusters more myself since I'm a run n gun/platformer nut.

New Ghostbusters II faithful to the license?! I dont remember ogres, chainsaw ghost butchers, Jack O' Lantern head ghosts, pink gargoyles, or phantom ninjas in the film.....but I suppose it does include the Scalari Brothers, ghost nanny, and Vigo. Also the settings are accurate like the abandoned subway and apartment building.... Eh whatever, the game is DAMN good and a favorite nes title of mine and overall the best GB game in my opinion. The Genesis and other NES games are total garbage if you ask me. Too many stairs.....

Master System for David Crane version.
    Genesis for second-best console version
New Ghostbusters II for best console and handheld version.

Yes! How is that game? Ever since I discovered it I loved the overhead design and how the gameplay was, but I only saw about 2 minutes of it. If it's good I'm sure I'll be on the lookout for an FC cart of this game -- same comments for Gremlins 2 for FC, actually.

just download it and try the game for yourself then buy a cart if you want. The Famicom cart is unfortunately getting pricey and last copy on ebay went for over $40! I paid $11 for it last year :S

The 'mons in Genesis Busters are done in a complete mishmash of styles, ranging from anime (the perverted-looking basket ghost), traditional (the ghost with two mouths/three bodies woman ghost) and even robotics (the ice mecha that's literally named "crystarobo") but this "everything goes" mentality leaves it to be not faithful in the least, as well as the fact that the levels are original, and the storyline/characters are too.

NGBII includes (as you said) levels from the actual movie, characters from the actual movie and ghosts that, at the very least, would be more likely to appear in a GB film than the Genny one, while still being legitimately fun to play.

I do agree that the NES port of CraneBusters is pretty garbage, and II isn't much better.

David Crane's Ghostbusters for the C64. Why? Because it's the only Ghostbusters game I've ever played.

I can understand $40 for CIB but... loose?? I can't remember clearly but I may have seen one sell for a similar price boxed.

I'd count New Ghostbusters II (Famicom), Ghostbusters (Genesis) and Ghostbusters: The Video Game (360) as my absolute favorites. I also have a nostalgic soft spot for Ghostbusters (2600). The Real Ghostbusters (arcade) and Ghostbusters (SMS) weren't bad either.

Every other Ghostbusters game I've played has been a massive disappointment, especially the two U.S. NES games. Ugh.

I'm gonna be the odd guy out and say I liked Ghostbusters II, the US NES version. Yes, it kinda stunk, but it was tons better than the previous game. I actually beat the thing. Eventually.

And I'm aware that if it wasn't for that game we would've gotten New Ghostbusters II instead.

    Fuck.

Boxed it has been going between $85-120 recently in nice shape. Might get lucky and find a yamatoku lot on ebay with it for cheap.
