32x + genesis model 1 = no sound?

I recently got a 32x for free but it was missing the cables so i bought a model 1 to 32x cable and a AV out, both after market.

Hook it up, video works fine but there is no audio unless i use the headphone jack.

Is this normal for the 32x with a model 1?
