Default Items In Games That Are WAY More Expensive Than All Other Items

I am curious what games yall can recall that have one elusive item for sale in the in-game item shop or armory or whatever that is WAY WAY more expensive than all the other items available for purchase in the game?

Off the top of my head, the Soul Eater Ring from Castlevania Aria/Dawn of Sorrow is i believe $300,000, while all other items in the game aren't even close to that sum, which in turn makes the player have to repeatedly farm/harvest cash in order to amass the $300,000. Kind of worth it if you're going for 100% complete, but annoying as hell!!

What ridiculously priced in-game items do you guys/girls remember?

One that immediately comes to mind is the Bike in Pokémon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow. The shop sells them for $1,000,000; which is $1 more than the maximum amount you can even possibly have.

Of course, it's simultaneously also the least expensive item in the game as you're given the Bike Voucher, which means the Bike is free.

The first that springs to mind is from another Castlevania. The Duplicator sold by the Master Librarian in SOTN is priced at a cool half mil', quite ludicrously expensive compared to everything else in the game. Then there's the bow in Link's Awakening selling for a steep 980 rupees, practically ensuring that players embrace their inner thief.

I think Porygorn in that game is much worse. Just how many hours are you supposed to spend playing the slot machines to afford it? And of course if you just gotta catch 'em all, there's no way around it without cheating.

Some of the items in the Arcade in Super Paper Mario are kind of expensive, but I think the casino games in Super Mario RPG are much worse; they're not even interesting – specifically Look Away, which you have to win 100 times to win the Star Egg. Ugh.

everything is expensive because when you need said item, you are no where close to being able to buy it.

That one sword in Final Fantasy 6 Advance that costs 500k even though it only has 1 attack power.
Obviously there's a reason to buy such a shitty overpriced item...

Cloud's Villa in FF7, but that's not strictly an "in-game shop" item.

Don't ask me how I know this, but many of the later bikinis in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball are extremely expensive.

How about buying that expensive optional cabin in Earthbound very early in the game. I think it was like 100K and you made pennies to the dollar at that point in the game in comparison.

    Default Damnit wiggy!!!

I was going to say the blue ring buuuut, now I can't. I remember having to grind like crazy to get the wand in Ultima: Quest of the Avatar. It costs like 6500 gold! That's nearly three plate armors, six +1 long swords, 25 axes... wow it's retarded how expensive that thing is.

If you count the annoyance factor of having to gamble for tokens instead of cash, the Gingham Whip for Jessica in Dragon Warrior 8 is 200,000 tokens! Convert that to gold and DAYUM!

What was it in For the Frog the Bell Tolls that the prince couldn't afford? Like a potion from a witch or something?

Same situation in the auction house in Final Fantasy 6 when bidding on an airship model/piece or a talking chocobo or some other crap. I even saved up the ONE MEELION gold and the game still wouldn't let me buy it.

Lots of others I can't think of right now. Good night.

Isn't there a house in Earthbound that costs like a million dollars? And if you buy it its completely run down. But you do get a message from the game's creator.

The ENTIRE ending of Fable 3 was way too much. But in awesome retro games.

To me it was the bow in zelda when startin out. But thats mainly due to how impatient i am.

Also to me most upgrades in harvest moon are too expensive. At least for the gbc and gba. I feel like I will never have enough to get the things i want in those games. Thats mainly why i rarely get far before moving to a different game.

The house in EarthBound is $7500.

In Lagoon for SNES, there is an item called the Shiny Ball. It costs 10,000 Gold and is only available in the second town.
Enemies in that area give you 3-5 Gold each. I bought it once and it took about five hours of farming.
It's supposed to make your HP/MP recover faster, but I don't see any effect. Someone on youtube said it makes the last boss easier but I don't know myself.

You can't go back in the game.

Wasn't there something absurdly expensive in FFXI, which required you to farm these extremely rare items that were needed in vast quantities for something even more costly?

There's also the insanely costly clothing items in EVE Online (that you can buy with real money).

My first thought is how there are swimsuits in both Dead or Alive Extreme Volleyball games that are absurdly expensive compared to others. Like in the high 6 figures. The thing that's weird is that there's really no justification for it because most don't look any better than the ones that are just a few thousand Zack bucks. I believe the Venus swimsuit is like a million Zack bucks or something.

In Shining in the Darkness there are items that are marked as "deals" that you won't possibly be able to afford until way later in the game.

Ultima III: Exodus had weapons and armors that would take aeons of grinding to afford (I remember this being worse in the NES version for some reason), and what makes it worse is that by the time you can even get them, you've likely already found the superior Exotic (or Mystic) equipment.

That seems to be a trend in older RPGs (the first Dragon Warrior had this as well, IIRC): expensive equipment that, by the time you can afford it, you've already found something superior hidden in the game world.

i want to add that every item in Golden Axe warrior is way expensive because money is so difficult to come by it seems. I spend ages trying to get enough to get even basic status items

Definitely does seem like a trend in older RPGs, having items that once you can finally purchase them they've lost their use due to better items or already being at the very end of the game.

I think it was Marvel VS Capcom 2 on DC where, in order to make certain hidden characters cheaper, you can repeatedly exit and re-enter the shop screen and the price will randomly go down and up. Kind of a weird little quirk, but i remember doing some rapid enter-exit sessions to get as many MvsC2 characters as possible.
