Default Unreleased in Japan: a list of NES exclusives

Does anyone know where to find one of these lists online? I've Googled several different variations on the thread title, hoping to find that someone had compiled such a list, but no luck so far.

In the meantime, until such a list turns up, I've started compiling one. It's a work in progress, and if you can think of any games to add or corrections to make, feel free. I've grouped them all by U.S. publisher.

    Awesome idea for a thread!

I am a bit surprised that the Famicom didn't get Strider.

Japan sure dodged the bullet on a lot of bad games, but they had plenty of bad ones on their own too in their place. They missed out on a few good ones too though.

Add Square's Rad Racer II to the list, and Sunsoft's Spy Hunter. Neither have FC versions.

Gumshoe also has no FC version. That's Nintendo's isn't it?

Oh, and Mission: Impossible by Konami under the Ultra name.

Impressive list. You see a lot of stuff that would lean towards a Western market and not Japan (like the movie- and company-based ones, and the bible adventures), but also some that surprise you.

Were many of these games developed in Japan, but just not released there? I agree that Strider's surprising - you can see the Japanese/manga influence in the graphics.

    Awesome Thread.

I never knew Japan missed out on R.C Pro-Am. I really dislike racing games, but I played that one a ton. Truly an excellent game, one of the best games I've ever played on the NES. Really surprised it never got a Japanese release.

There are also games that oddly came out in the USA before Japan during the time Japan-first was the norm for NES. The first such example is Mach Rider.

    Default Surprised

Like everyone else, I too am surprised that there is no Famicom version of Strider. I'm also surprised that the Famicom didn't get Legendary Wings, Break Thru, Silkworm, and Qix! Aren't all of those titles originally Japanese arcade games? Surprising they were never released for Famicom. And Kick Master surprised me as well. That game seems like it was Famicom bound!

I just thought of something. Wouldn't looking through a Goodset of roms give us almost all the answers? If the game only says E, UE, or U then that would mean it is either excluded from Japan or the Japanese version has a different name usually made up of a combination of Japanese words + part of the English title.

Came across something when I checked out NintendoPlayer the other day, thought it was fairly relevant: http://www.nintendoplayer.com/unreleased/strider/

Thanks for all the input, guys. I've updated the original post with the additions made here, plus some more I dug up. This is something I felt has never been touched on: there are always lists of Famicom exclusives popping up (usually under the heading of "the best NES games you've never played" or some variation on that), but I'd never seen a complete list of non-Japanese exclusives. Which reminds me, I'd like to include some PAL exclusives as well under a separate heading, but have exactly no idea where to start. I can only think of two off the top of my head: Noah's Ark, published by Konami, and The Smurfs, published by Infogrames.

Regarding the Famicom's lack of Strider: that one's still a mystery, compounded by the fact that the manga it tied into was released in Japan. I've even asked Isuke about it, but he was unaware of what was happening on the Famicom side of things (he only worked on the arcade game).

I'm also attempting another list: a list of Famicom Disk System exclusives that were released in the U.S. as cartridges. That one's not going as well as it could.

    I forgot Fester's Quest.

Nintendo Tetris wasn't on FC either.

Those are exactly the opposite of what I'm going for here. I'm not looking for Japanese exclusives, I'm looking for non Japanese exclusives.

I've made additional changes to the list. Thanks to all that have helped so far!

I added some comments to your [http://hg101.proboards.com/thread/11...sives]Hardcore Gaming thread[/url]
Mostly some of the unlicensed games being from Asian developers (like Sachen, etc.) and probably got Famicom releases.
