Which series takes the cake iyo,and why?
If I had to pick one SERIES between the two, I would probably choose Metal Slug as being the better series overall.
However if I had to pick one game at being the best out of all the contra and metal slug games I would have to pick Contra on the NES.
INVALID COMPARISON.
While yes, they're both run and gun arcade style platformers with a high level of difficulty, the Contra and Metal Slug series share just as many differences as they do similarities. In fact, they are probably more different than they are similar.
Neither can therefore "take the cake".
I personally like both series, and think they both are great examples of the genre done right by the best game devs. To exclude one series would be a critical mistake.

I've never really gotten down on the Metal Slug series the way I have with the Contra series. Is there a Metal Slug that is the game in the series that would be a good way to get into the series with?
The Neo-Geo Metal Slug games are much like the Megaman games on the NES. They are all graphically very similar, in all of them you're doing pretty much the same things, just in different locales. Your question is like asking if there is a NES Megaman game that the game in the series. The easy answer out would be Megaman 2, but I wouldn't answer that. Instead, I'd say they each bring something to the table and taken collectively they are an awesome experience that is much greater than any one of the games could provide in a vacuum.
Metal Slug 3 is a good starting point though, if you've never played any of the Metal Slug games.

While Contra is great, the Metal Slug games are incredible. I have much more fun playing Metal Slug co-op than Contra co-op. Metal slug has just so much more going on while your playing with the boats and prisoners to free and awesome weapons and grenades and different enemies and of course the Metal Slug vehicle (basically a souped up tank with lasers), it's just a better overall experience imo.

Which series takes the cake?
Neither, they team up to blast the hell out of a new alien order which turns out to be led by Master Chief and Gordon Freeman and make the world safe for games that don't suck.
Contra fast paced while metal slug slug slow paced.I liked both series so i don't have a favorite. If you want to take you're time then metal slug is perfect, but if you want it quick then contra is the best for that.I remember right after contra low came out and i was disgusted by that entry in the series. Not to mention i had itch still for run'n'gun titles and then i heard metal slug had a port to the saturn.Soon afterwards i imported it asap and shortly became a fan of the series.Still the ms series reached it's peak with MS3,then it went all down hill.

I have more fun playing a variety of the Contra games than I do the Metal Slugs. No denying that quality of the Slug series, though, and it has a lot of strong entries. Its strongest installment might just be the original, though. (Or would that be X? Depends on who you ask...MS3 also deserves praise, but the end sequence is more an overly long spectacle than fun to play, after the first time.)

Personally I prefer metal slug, the art style is more up my ally. But that's just my opinion.
I disagree, Halo is indeed quite iconic at this point in time. Not as iconic as it will likely become in the future, but to discount it seems a bit rash. Master chief has become a symbol in gaming like Mario, Sonic, Pacman, Zelda, etc. maybe not to the same level. But show someone who isn't into gaming a picture of Gordon Freeman and a picture of Master Chief, who do you think they'll recognize more often?
I'm having a hard time seeing Master Chief as "iconic." He's just a dude in a powered armor suit. Practically every character in Red vs Blue is a re-skin of him.
Mario and Sonic at least have a distinct appearance, and Gordon Freeman has a face.
... But getting back on topic, truth be told the only Metal Slugs I've played are the NGPC iterations, which I enjoy but they're not exactly OMG MY FAVORITES. In terms of Arcade shooters, I actually prefer Gunforce 2 aka Geostorm, which is apparently a precursor to Metal Slug, done by the same team when they were working for Irem.
If I had to only choose one I would choose Metal Slug X as the definitive Metal Slug that I've played granted I haven't played them all and couldn't care less about Metal Slug 4 and 5 since it looked horrible compared to the others since it was supposedly developed by a Korean development team. The original Metal Slug is also great and Metal Slug X is supposedly Metal Slug 2 remixed.
Ehh seen this topic up for days now and never really came up with a good answer. I don't think there is much of a versus on this one in all fairness. Sure you play a soldier, sure the dude has a gun, and you run along and kill junk and pick up other guns, but the differences are wide enough I just don't see it fair to argue one versus the other.
Contra you have your fast paced on foot dude taking down aliens, robots, and other odd stuff. Metal Slug is more slow paced even stop and go, vehicles are in there, you save POWs, and the enemy list is just more varied from grunts to some weird-shit-itis out of nowhere type stuff. I'd say they compliment each other.
