I just got a PSX that always goes into the CD player screen... even when there's a game in. It's probably a common problem. For $500 and the block, what is it?

take the cover off, and try to get it to work by manually pushing down the little switch that the door pushes down when it's closed. Jiggle it a bit (you may need something like a Qtip to push it down with. It could very well be the door sensor. You may need to defeat it.
If not that your laser could be DOA. Try the door first!

Actually, you can tell if it's the door or not, by whether or not the disc spins up. If it doesn't spin, it could be the door. If it spins up, and fails to recognize the game, it's not the door.
