Default Phantasy Star IV appreciation topic

Finally committed myself to doing a playthrough of this baby and it's quickly vaulted into my all-time favorites category. Right now I'm on Dezolis about to head to the Air Castle and get the Flame of Eternity back. I'm thinking of getting into the original game in the series after this since I have the Phantasy Star Collection for GBA and this game is so full of references to it.

Yeah I just beat Phantasy Star at the very beginning of this month and it was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to number 2 because of it. It will be a good while before I get to 4 but I'm sure it will be great if it is anything like 1.

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.
I've messed around with the second game before but never got that far in it. This is the first game in the series I'm attempting to conquer

One thing to note about the first game: leveling up only does so much. Buying better equipment as soon as possible is what makes a HUGE difference. Especially the weapons.

Then you'll be in for a pleasant surprise. The fourth is amazing.

The only way im playing ps1 is if they make a remake on 3ds where you can draw maps of dungeons like etrian odyssey. That would be awesome, but playing it on sms drawing maps on paper is such a pain in the ass.

I beat the game without maps. If the game doesn't come with an auto map feature, I try to remember what the area looked like without taking the time to map them. It might be harder for me now than back then, but I did get to the end of Wizardry 5 without requiring any maps.

Is there any reason for me to spend any time in the Weapon Plant on Dezolis other than leveling up?

i beat #1 not too long ago and started #2 and wasn't overly thrilled with it. Too much money grinding and the castle, dungeons, whatever are just horrible to wander through.

I have 3 & 4 sitting on the shelf....tempted to just start them and see if I like them more. I would like to finish 2 just by using game genie to get money but you can't save if you use it.

Phantasy Star IV is an awesome game!

It has a really good flow to it and doesnt require too much grinding. The only two places I remember having to really grind were the Air Castle and the Rift at the end. It has great characters, a great story, solid music and the innovative anime slide shows. It's certainly the most accessible game in the series.

Phantasy Star II has an incredible story and a fantastic soundtrack. It also has that "Old School" difficulty for better or worse. The only area where the game has not aged gracefully would be the level/ dungeon design. The Old School difficulty coupled with the uninspired and confusing dungeon design makes it hard to stomach these days, but its quite rewarding if you stick with it. It was quite a ground breaking title at the time and has a lot to offer under the surface.
If a god is willing to prevent evil, but not able, then he is not omnipotent. If he is able, but not willing, then he must be malevolent. If he is both willing and able, then why is there evil? If he is neither able or willing then why call him a god?

I don't know why, but I've never been able to get very far in PS4. It's a great game, I don't dispute that, and I beat all three of the others right after they came out, but I couldn't tell you how many times I've restarted PS4 over the years, on cart, in emulators, in official collections only to abandon it before getting very far. I don't think I've ever even gotten to the part where SPOILER

    Alys dies.

PS-does this board not have proper spoiler tag support?

doesn't seem to work.

My absolute favorite RPG. I love the battle system, the side missions and the characters have more personality than any RPG I've ever played.

Yeah, that boss requires a LOT of grinding.
