Default Mortal Kombat I for Genesis question

If you use a six button controller with the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat I, can you actually use the extra buttons or are they non functional when used with this game? I know the game came out before the newer controller, but did they build in the functionality anyway?

    Thanks for reading.

i remember buying a six button controller and mortal kombat at the same time back when they were released and y and b worked as block while the others worked as the arcade layout worked.

Looks like so far we have one vote for mirrored buttons and one vote for different buttons (with y and b performing identical functions).

Opened up my emulator and found x/z are high punch/kick and a/c are low punch/kick.

If I remember right, a 6-button joystick just mirrors A B and C, all attacks. Start is block. Never tried it, but I remember the Sega CD verision was the first one with 6 buttons for Sega systems. The only thing the Sega CD wasn't good for was the "now loading" Shang Tsung. There was no way to play the first game with 6-buttons, fatalities, and No-Load Shang Tsung until you got an Xbox 360/Playstation 3.

I'll check it out when I get home this afternoon. I just picked up a few Genesis games that I've got to test anyway, so I'll pop in MK while I'm at it.

The top row is definitely high and bottom is "low" attack. You really have to look to see the difference.

I tried it in my emulator again: in 3-button A is punch, B and C are kick and Start is block.

I just tested it on real hardware with a standard Sega brand 6 button controller (not the one with the blue button). A-low punch, B-block, C-low kick, X-high punch, Y-block, Z-high kick, Start-block

Yes, 3 buttons are devoted to the same block move.

If it did (and I'm having a hard time finding the exact release date of the controller, every source just gives the year, 1993) it wasn't by much. I certainly never had to play the game with the 3-button, and I rented the game a lot that fall when it came out.

The Genesis version of WWF Royal Rumble apparently came out 2 days after MK (if wiki's dates can be believed) and it supported the 6 button controller too. Actually that one is damn near unplayable without it.

Looking back on why I wrote that, the only reason I think that is because one of the criticisms leveled against the Genesis version of MK1 is that it didn't really offer an arcade-type experience because of the lower number of buttons compared to the SNES port. In one video I recall watching the port of MK2 was then referenced with the 6-button controller as an example of how Sega/Midway fixed this problem, but it was left unclear as to whether or not MK1 supported the 6-button controller or not. I think it was a CGR video refuting the AVGN Genesis vs. SNES video...

My main interest in asking the question was to try to further determine where on my buying list a 6-button controller should fall. I only have a few Genesis games, but MK1 is one of them, and I like playing any game with the controller it was designed for if possible. I'm just glad there wasn't some super obvious answer I had looked over in the game menu or on the label or something.

All the responses have been great and helpful

Not sure when it was actually released, but I do recall the controller was announced earlier in that year, at the same time SF2CE was announced.
I think it might've been even as early as the March(I think) issue of EGM when they had the first alpha screens of home MK1, I think they mentioned a 6-button controller was already in development.

I was pretty damn used to it, until I got a 6 button. Certainly no worse than using B & A to jump in a Technos brawler on the NES, or Y & B for specials in other brawlers/Super Fire Pro Wrestling X/Premium for the SNES.

It's great on the 6-button Genesis controller. I wasted more than a few days playing that one.

While you're at it, might as well enter the blood code:

Incidentally, I found this list of six-button compatible games over at MobyGames:

    http://www.mobygames.com/attribute/s...teId,191/p,16/

An excellent reference for knowing when to bust out the six-button controller and when to leave it in the drawer.

Realistically, you should never have to put the 6 button away. That's what the mode button is for, if a game doesn't seem to respond otherwise(hold it down while you start the console).

The 6 button controller was available at retail before the release of Mortal Kombat. I picked up my 6-button pads a week before MK was released and I got MK on release day.
