Default SNES with graphics issue in certain games

    Hello,

A couple of years ago I bought a SNES on a flea market, and just recently I decided to hook it up.
However, I noticed there is some problem with its graphics.

Fifa International Soccer plays just fine. No issues with the graphics or whatsoever.

    However, with F-Zero, problems appear.

Main screen. Notice the garbled rubbish on top of the screen, and that there's no racing track.

During a race (demo mode). Again, no racing track.

After a race, back at the main screen.

Notice the top bar has changed from garbled rubbish to some mountain-ish landscape, which it actually has to be.

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this problem? Faulty capacitor, bad solder joint, maybe?
Or is this a problem with which I'd be better off buying another SNES, instead of troubleshooting for ten hours, only finding that an irreplacable IC has died?
I've already cleaned the pins on the cartridge and the cartridge slot in the SNES with 97% alcohol, but to no avail.

It is a PAL system, and the stickers on the bottom read:
    UP10959248, model number SNSP-001A(FRG), ©1992, SNSP-HOL. (Presumably a SNSP-CPU-01 board.)

The F-Zero cartridge is fine (at least, two years ago when I played it on someone else's SNES).
The discoloration on the screen from left to right is CRT wear on my projector, not an issue with the SNES.

    Thanks in advance!

it looks like its having a problem with Mode 7 graphics. I wonder if the same would happen on Mario kart and/or pilotwings

kinda sounds like this is the same thing:

too bad the links to the pics are broken
might do a bit more research on fixing mode 7 on it but if you cant you might be able to sell it as parts or just use it as a system to play normal games on

i'd poke around the internets a bit more for you to check it out because I find it interesting, but its almost 3am
if it were mine I would dig in a little more to see what cause it to fail like that

    Thanks for your reply, Niku-Sama!

Yep, looks like it could be Mode 7 which is failing on me.
Unfortunately I only have these two games to test with.

I've ordered a 4.5mm SNES screwdriver, but it still has to be delivered in the mail.
Just wanted to ask here first whether it's a common problem with the SNES and what the cause could be, before I (more or less) blindly start measuring/replacing components on the board.
Piles of electronic components here, no problem as far as that's concerned. Exotic IC's are a different story, though.

I'll report back as soon as I've received the screwdriver and opened up the SNES.
