Default Will Genesis Model 1 hookups harm an SMS?

    OK, real quick question here.

Tonight I started a SEGA master system collection through an eBay purchase of 8 SMS games for $13.90 - R-Type, Kenseiden, Alien Syndrome, Shinobi, Altered Beast, Double Dragon, After Burner and Space Harrier. A fairly good start since I'm a huge R-Type fan and Kenseiden and Shinobi are among my favorite games on the console.

While I'm anxious to try 'em out, there's one problem - I don't own a master system, powerbase converter or master gear.

However, there is an SMS in the house! One of my friends owns a master system and a decent share of games for it, but the remainders of the collection were found in a large garbage bag in the closet without the power cord or AV cable.

Assuming it still works after god knows how many years hidden and dusty, I may have a solution, but wanted to double-check before I test it out.

I've read on a few sites that the Model 1 AC Adaptor (1602) will power an SMS without problems, and Genesis Model 1 AV video cables will do the job for video output. I just happen to have 2 1602 adapters and a model 1 AV cable in my model 1.

While I'm pretty sure with the AV cables "if the part fits, it works", my concern is the apparent different voltage of the 1602 vs. normal SMS power supply.

TL;DR - Has anyone used a Model 1 Genesis power brick with a Model 1 SMS without problems? Thanks in advance for the peace of mind

no, thats fine. the master system and model 1 Genesis share the same power requirements - 9vDC 1A negative center polarity. you need not worry. Just dont use an NES power supply.

Last I checked the parts are fully compatible. What's different with the voltage? I remember there were a few different Model 1 Genesis adapters and some had different voltages from each other, they all worked on Model 1 systems just the same.

I swap my SMS on the tv stand with my Genesis 1 all the time. Cords stay plugged in to the av switch and power monitor.

    Thanks for the responses

I hooked 'er up, hit power and hoped for the best. Despite sitting in a garbage bag for years, the old girl still worked like new. My Genesis controllers worked fine with it since it had no SMS ones. Ah, gotta love SEGA compatibility...

the master system controller is incredibly simple - it's literally just wires connected to traces connected to push buttons. there is no IC control chip. the genesis controller can disable its control chip for SMS and Atari.

That's a pretty good deal. R-Type and Kenseiden are two of my favorite SMS games. I also love the SMS version of Space Harrier, though I'm probably the only one. You had to be an uber-fan and have played it when it was released I suppose.
