Why are PC-98 series computers so expensive?

I want to get into the Japanese NEC PC-98 computers because of the high amount of anime and anime-based games on the computer. But, there's one little problem. All of the PC-98 series computers I come across on eBay are SUPER expensive. The lowest I've seen for one so far is around $2,000, which is for the laptop version and a newer version of the PC-98. Wikipedia says that over 18 million PC-98s were sold by 1999. There is such a high amount of them yet they are SUPER pricey. Why is this?

I'd be interested as well but those prices are nuts I'd check with some importers I can't remember but I came across a site that has a service offering to find things in Japan surely they could find one more affordably even after a finders fee and shipping if so let me know I will do likewise!
