I will admit to loving stuff like this, and I reckon there'll be plenty of people here who will too.

That's neat and all but uhhh this is copyrighted material? Considering the goal is roughly around $45,000, I really can't see every publisher turning a blind eye to this.

btw... it doesn't take care of everything, but it shows that this angle has been considered

There shouldn't be any problem copyright wise - it's a Journalistic angle.

I don't know why there would be confusion. Box art is still reproduction of the art. Which either the artist or the publisher that commissioned that artwork owns.

I'm shocked this book got this far without somebody realizing that.

Turns out they made it anyway. No kickstarter, but they're taking pre-orders as we speak.

You know, I like the idea, but he put absolutely no effort into fixing the scuffs and other damage that could easily have been done in photoshop. Nor did he crop out the end flaps. It just doesn't look very professional.

Eugh, yeah, I feel like I'm looking at eBay auction photos. If you're going to do a project like that, why on earth wouldn't you make sure all the photos are of mint condition copies of the games? I can find cleaner images of the covers on frickin' GameFAQs.

I think I could live with the simple box photos if they did the entire library, but for only 250 games, it's neither complete nor stellar.

This sounds like a scam. Fool the fools twice.

No money changed hands- the Kickstarter was cancelled before the funding period ended.

Normally I'd agree, but it's being published through Bitmap Books, who have a track record of very high quality releases.

If they were going to use scans of worn boxes I feel like it would have been nice if there were a dust sleeve or book cover designed to look like an aged piece of cardboard packaging. I understand not having the resources or time to enhance pics or track down mint boxes or clean promotional artwork, so embracing the aged boxes with a complimentary aged book design would have been nice.

I'm okay with the "worn" images being used. I'm just not big on the concept. This was probably too difficult if not impossible, but to me, I'd rather have seen the original artwork in print, rather than a scan of the box at all, which is really only a piece of the source painting. Unfortunately as with anything you can get from Bitmap Books, shipping to the USA is a fortune.
