Default Mystery arcade game from the early 80s

Okay... So i was hoping you guys could help out a friend of mine. He said he played an arcade game back in the early 80's, but has no idea what it was called.

I gathered all the info I could. He said it was a cocktail cabinet. He said it had 5 buttons arranged in a "plus" shape. So there were buttons at N,S,E and W. In the middle of those buttons was the fire button. He said you had a gun or a cannon in the center of the screen and missiles would fire at you from all 4 edges of the screen. You had to hit the correct button to flip your cannon in that direction and the hit the fire button to blow up the missile before it hits your cannon.

I always love putting my gaming lore to the test, but this is a game i am certain I have never played or heard of. He said if i can find out what game it is he is going to buy one for his game room. I posted this here because it gets a bit more traffic than the arcade section, but also he was interested if there was a console port.

    Space Zap?

Cabinet controls aren't exactly as specified, but it looks quite close.

    That was quick!

This has to be the game. The fire button is separate but EVERYTHING else matches. I told him I didn't know what the game was but I was certain someone on DP would.

Thanks a bunch! Time for me to check and see if Space Zap had any home ports...

Truthfully, I just scrolled through my MAME collection and it was the only one that fit the bill.

The linked Youtube video doesn't really represent the graphics the player would have saw. MAME replicates the overlay used and may be something your friend may want to try out before he buys a cab.

Space Zap was ported to the Astrocade as Space Fortress. The port looks pretty faithful, and there's a video review from Nice and Games here.

There's Vault Assault (homebrew) for the 2600.
