Mega Drive Games/Genesis 3 Compatibility?

I played a "Super Real Basketball" Mega Drive game today on a Sega Genesis 3 .
To my Surprise it fit right in and played...but the Mega drive games won't fit a Gen 1 or 2...(I always knew they wouldn't fit the Gen 1 or 2 but I never knew they would fit the Gen 3.
I had first used a Game Genie,and then I tried to just put them into the Gen 3,and they fit The Super 3 in 1 Sports game was the first to work.
Then,
I tried a Mega Drive Altered Beast game and I can't get it to work at all..it just goes to the small Genesis title screen..but no game comes up.
I wonder if I'm doing something wrong...I cleaned everything real well..
Do all Mega Drive games work on a Genesis 3?

I recently picked up the 3 games below..
I know the top is a Famicom Goonies..I played that today with a converter.
The bottom is the 3 in 1 Sports game..that I'm not sure of..
It has Japanese writing on it's back label ...but is it a Mega Drive Game..?
The Volley Ball Game on this cart is exactly the same as Power Spikes II for the Neo Geo MVS.

The middle game is Goonies..but I'm not sure on what system it is for..
I can't get it to work in anything?The connectors width don't match anything I know of.

The 2nd copy of Goonies looks like an MSX System cartridge to me!

IIRC, all MD games will fit into a Genny III, but SEGA placed lock out devices into the carts after a certain year in order to prevent inter-region play. Youre gonna need a converter! Check out the Import section of the forums
