Cool Atari Jaguar VGA / Component Video 480p (HD Quality) 64-bit Power! ;D

So I'm a Jaguar nut and decided to spend a good deal of money and time getting the best picture from my Jag. Basically I have the Jag outputting 9 pin CGA RGB DB9 converted to modern 15 pin VGA for playing on my PC monitor, and also laterally converted to Component for recording. This video explains it best.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6To5l-IDTSk

It's taken a lot of tweaking to get everything just right... My most recent Jag vids on YouTube are what I think is the best I will get quality wise. I record in component 480p, and while technically not HD, if you make the YouTube video full screen and 480p, it's super clear and you won't even really know it's not 720p HD... Not only have I enhanced the visuals, but the audio is also enhanced thanks to using a CatBox like device that has a headphone jack, outputting really great sound that is louder than what comes from a composite or S-video cable. So hope you enjoy my Jag videos and lots more to come as I basically have a complete Jaguar game collection. Mostly thanks to a guy who sold Jaguar multicarts on ebay!

Remember to switch video quality on YouTube from 360p to 480p as it makes a big difference. Watch full screen too if you are on a PC or Mac computer. I'm sure the vids will look great on portable devices too. I have seen some Jaguar videos uploaded on Youtube in 720p and honestly I can't see a difference in quality between those and mine, even full screen. If anything mine might be a touch sharper.

So dim the lights and crank the sound and experience the true power an unmodified Jag can put out!

Interesting series of videos. I find it interesting that the Jaguar was capable of perhaps more than it ever was given the time to show us, though Atari's abysmal marketing of the system, along with their repeated failures to retap the video game market after they had a hand in the '83 crash, were major contributing factors to the system's inevitable demise. Unfortunately, for Atari, it was too little, too late. I would have liked to see them continue on, and perhaps had another shot at the console market, given enough time to design something that was truly competitive, but alas, Atari couldn't get enough good 3rd party games/publishers to help bolster their position. Atari (as a name) had created too much enmity and bad blood w/in the market to truly be competitive at that point, so when they should have been licensing properties for upgraded remakes of classics, and forging ahead with new IP's, they continued to try and compete in the console space, which sealed their fate.

From a games perspective, the Jaguar did have some solid titles, though I think a large enough percentage of the games were less than stellar, which also didn't help their cause. For every Rayman or Aliens vs. Predator, you had a shoddy port like Doom or Raiden, as well as a Cybermorph, Kasumi Ninja, or Club Drive. I picked up a Jaguar back in 2001, just hunting through electronics at a pawn shop, and ended up with a boxed unit for a good price. So far, however, the only games I've been able to score are Cybermorph (the pack-in), Kasumi Ninja, and the rather solid port of Zool 2, which is actually a lot of fun to play. Sadly, I haven't seen most of the decent Jag games on store shelves for years, because most of the avid collectors have snapped that stuff up, and where I live, there probably wasn't much of a Jag presence to begin with. If I had the ability to hook my Jag up in a manner like you've done for these videos, I might be more inclined to have it out and hooked up to my TV, though with only the RF adapter, I'm hard pressed to put it out in place of one of the consoles I spend more time with. My 3DO languishes in storage the same way.

Doom on Jaguar is my favorite console version. Yes, it's missing music, but it has the verticality to the levels and moves at a reasonable pace and supports the link cable. Only console port programmed by id.

I agree that improved visual fidelity makes a bigger difference with the Jaguar than most systems of the '90s. I stumbled across an Atari stock S-video cable several years ago, and the crisp lines and colors really make those textureless game pop more. Tempest in s-video is awesome, and it'd only be better in RGB I bet.

If you're looking for fun Jaguar games that aren't too pricey, check out Brutal Sports Football (basically Mutant League Rugby), Evolution: Dino Dudes (a port of The Humans), Cannon Fodder (the whole game is like commando missions from Command and Conquer), and Val d'Isere Skiing and Snowboarding. A lot of fun on a console that needs it so you don't make yourself finish playing all the way through Flip Out like I did once upon a time.

Do you have a link to where you bought the first part of that setup - the item you bought from Retrokids or whatever you said?

They are actually Atari ST ports / conversions. I put "arcade" in one of the titles of them. Some do have audio and some don't.

So a Jaguar game considered one of the worst actually has some very good music.

I have some fond memories of this console and some not so fond. Tons of crap games but a few I found addictive like tempest and a homebrew title I can;'t recall. The darn cd add on I spent quite a bit on died rather quickly. Never got to play with skunkboard but if I ever get into this again I know who to come to and that skunkboard is a good idea.
