Question Should Newly Developed Games for Dreamcast Have CD-style or DVD-style Cases?

Like many old consoles, the Dreamcast lives on with a small stream of newly developed game releases created by the indie commercial game community. The question is, which type of box style do you prefer: DVD-style "keep cases" or CD-style "jewel cases?" There have been releases both official and unofficial using both types of cases, but everyone has an opinion. Which type do you prefer and why?

I prefer jewel cases. They're fragile, but they match the original media better (other than posthumous shooters and acouple of games like Cosmic Smash). DVD cases have always felt cheap to me anyway, and they take up way more storage space for no reason.

I prefer DVD cases due to more sturdy (except for the dumb ecco cases) and room for a larger sized game manual.

However, new games for the Dreamcast should be a standard Jewel case to keep the same layout of the existing library.

Agreed, jewel cases would be better for the sake of uniformity.

I myself also like the look and feel of the CD style Jewel case over the DVD case.

ABSOLUTELY the DVD cases. I'm constantly encountering PS1 or older DOS/WindowsPC games that are otherwise in good shape, but there's some random crack in the jewel case where it got bumped, fell off a table, or what-have-you. Some have broken tines that are supposed to hold the disc in place, but the jewel plastic was too fragile even when handled properly. I don't want the same thing being a problem with newly-made games! There are reasons the PS2, OGXbox, 360, etc switched to sturdier cases. >_>

Don't like how much space they take up on a shelf? Fine, get a package of 100 cheap CD cases that shatter into a billion pieces if you so much as think about them , stick your game in them, and put the "massive" original case in a box somewhere.

It's not like DVD-sized cases take up as much room as the old PS1 longboxes, sheesh.
I hate it when people write their initials on a game cart's label. Can't get it off without ruining part of the label!

Jewel cases are more brittle, but they aren't that fragile, and I don't see anyone calling for long boxes here. I think you may have telekinetic powers if your thoughts are beating up jewel cases so badly.

Joking aside, I wish DVD cases were smaller. It's not like they couldn't do shorter, slimmer cases instead of these crummy eco boxes.

It would be nice to have those games in Jewel cases, but I sort of look at them as special edition DC games, since they weren't official releases on the console. The large box art and beautiful manuals that come with the DVD cases is pretty cool.

I definitely agree with most here, in that jewel cases are the way to go for uniformity's sake, and less so for space concerns.

    I voted DVD.

I sort new releases by publisher anyways, so it's not that big of a deal unless the publisher screws around and does both (I'm looking at you, Dux 1.5 and Alice's Mom!!!). The GOAT Store and redspotgames are cool. NG Dev Team is cool. HuCAST is super annoying. Quite possibly the worst thing would be to mimic the original packaging entirely. I see many "DVD case replacements" on ebay and I wonder if new collectors might be duped into thinking they are some sort of variant.

I lean toward DVD because it is modern, and because I sort it seperately from my other regional games they stand out on their own. Friends see the US games, the PAL blues, and the Japanese white and orange, and then ask "what are these?" I get to answer "They're NEW!!!" Also, most of these titles see limited print runs, so I feel that they are worthy of a different packaging format to compliment them.
    it's thinking

I actually prefer DVD style. I loved collecting for saturn and want to collect for the original Xbox. That said I think it might be nice to offer both styles

I would prefer if they started making CD cases out of the same material PS3 Blu Ray cases were made of, with booklet holding tabs. They already have cases like that without the tabs or plastic sleeve for artwork.

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.[/quote]
