Default Start buttons not working on SNES console

I've got a problem with my SNES. When I play with my super gameboy the start button won't work. I tried re-seating the ribbon cable but with no luck. Has anyone encountered this? I already tried swapping out controllers so I know it's not the controller. This seems to be an issue on both ports.

Standard or third party controllers? In my experience, the late release controllers with the Nintendo logo imprinted in the plastic on the front and a thinner wire are shit, and prone to tons of issues. I've had the best experience with early gen Nintendo-branded controllers and the Ascii Pad.

No this is across the board. I've tired my known working pads from the original system in 1991 plus some new ones and my old fighting stick which was working on my PC via an adapter.

if it only does it when using the super game boy then I'd wager a guess that its a problem in the super Gameboy it self.

It could be a problem with games using the expansion features like Star Fox and Yoshi's Island, the Super Gameboy uses those expansion features too. Might want to check that out before deciding that the Super Gameboy cartridge is defective.
