Default Old School (I.E, 2D) RPGs (JRPGs particularly)

New to the forum, so I'm not sure if there's a thread for this already, but here's the skinny:

I have lately been on a hunt to track down any old school RPGs of relative quality. I currently have/purchased Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star IV, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, and Terranigma. I will be buying Secret of Mana, Phantasy Star II and Secret of Evermore when the opportunity arises.

I am mainly looking for what I guess could be referred to as more "under the radar" type JRPGs for the NES, SNES, and Genesis, although I'd be more than fine with strategy RPGs or action RPGs being suggested as well.

Check out Arcana for SNES. And it gets a lot of flak, but I'm a fan of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (I like it more than II/IV and V; still haven't played III/VI). Oh, and you're probably already aware of them, but Lufia II and Super Mario RPG are musts.

    For SNES:
    Robotrek
    Brain Lord
    Paladin's Quest
    Breath of Fire
    Breath of Fire II
    Tecmo's Secret of the Stars
    Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
    Lagoon
    Dragon View
    The Illusion of Gaia
    Soul Blazer

    For Genesis:
    Sorcerer's Kingdom
    Sword of Vermillion
Beggar Prince (gets a new print run next year)
    Beyond Oasis
    Crusader of Centy

    For NES:
    Dragon Warrior I-IV
    Faria

I'm sure I can think of more later, but that's a start off the top of my head. Also, there are a ton more if you do Japanese games.

Warsong on the Genny is a really good stategy rpg. One of the few I can get into. Can't go wrong with Shining Force either.

Landstalker is a great action rpg. Isometric and very puzzly.

    Another plug for SNES' Robotrek.

Definitely some major Engrish, maybe a little bit simple, but I really enjoyed it's sci-fi story line. Truthfully, I think it's more enjoyable overall than more recognizable sci-fi RPG titles like Secret of Evermore.

You might want to check out the Lufia and Breath of Fire games on the SNES.

Maybe not here, but I'm sure it's been discussed on the Internet at large a gazillion times. Anything with a Completed shrine over at RPG Classics may meet your broadly-defined needs.

This is just what I need. Thanks, dude.

Also appreciate all the suggestions thus far. Except for Mystic Quest, that game looks like shite to me.

    NES:
Legend of the Ghost Lion - Really unique RPG with some special mechanics. You don't level up, instead you find "fragments of hope" in treasure chests, and you summon spirits from various items to help you fight.

    GENESIS:
Super Hydlide. Don't be thrown off by it being a sequel to an infamous RPG--its very much improved.

Crusader of Centy - This game's obscurity is a good example of pro-Nintendo bias in gaming, as pretty much all critics could think to say about it was "its a ripoff of Zelda" funny thing is, its actually not even all that similar--Landstalker is a far more direct ripoff. Couple that with a story that starts typical and then goes into unexpected places....

Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun - This game may take some getting used to, but once you do its a very fun game with awesome play mechanics and, again, a pretty unique storyline (when I told a friend about it, he commented that it sounded more like a horror game than an RPG).

    SNES:
Earthbound, though I suspect that's already on your radar (and may be out of your price range).

Lagoon - This is a "love it or hate it" game. Its got that "first gen SNES feel" and stands out almost as being nostalgic even if you discover it late (which I did). However, there is one huge problem... your weapon is incredibly short. Like you almost have to be touching the enemies to hit them. Fortunately A) you can save anywhere except in boss rooms and B) you do eventually get magic. However you can't use magic in boss battles, so almost all of them come down to finding a way to cheese the system (or in some cases you simply have to gain a level). There's an episode of Game Quickie that covers this, I'd recommend looking it up.

also I love Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia (I never got to play Terranigma, the third in the series, though).

Old school RPGs are US RPGs and played on computers like Apple ][, A8, C64, IBM/Tandy, not awful Japan consoles.
(Except DragonStomper, which is a great console RPG)

Yeah because there were no great (and no western-made) RPGs on the NES, SNES, Master System and Sega Genesis, right?
