Default Pokemon TCG and the E-Reader?

alright I just picked up a mad stack of pokemon cards for $2 and I noticed that theres an e-reader symbol and the teeny tiny code thing running along 2 sides of the cards.

how did this work and did it work in conjunction with any other games?

I play MTG not pokemon, but when I was at the trift and noticed the logo and figured I should pick them up. i'd say its about 250-300 cards seemingly from the same era, nothing foil though

Kind of. The video game cards (like those for bonus content in Ruby and Sapphire) aren't part of the TCG.
One significant card is the Eon Ticket. Allows visiting the island for Latios or Latias and its Soul Dew.

I don't know much about the ereader TCG cards. Mainly Pokedex entries, some minigames and stuff too.

The E-Reader Pokemon TCG cards are an interesting novelty which I'd like to own a full collection of someday. I've got a good portion of them so far.

Here's the breakdown: The shorter strips on the bottom contain Pokedex data only. At this time, they were not printing Pokedex data onto the cards themselves. The longer strips on the left contain information for applications.

Applications include things such as short videos, minigames, hidden attacks, coin flip, and music for some of the Pokemon. The short videos are stupid 10 second videos that just have an apple falling on a Pokemon's head or something. Hidden attacks are another thing that isn't printed on the card: full attack data is revealed when you scan the code, and it will be something like a 1 in 3 chance of something occurring, and the application will tell you whether it is successful or not. Coin flip just gives you an animated coin that tells you whether a coin toss is successful or not. It's usually included with Pokemon that have printed attacks that involve coin tossing. The music application is a 4 part construction game, where one card gives you a background, one card gives you the tune, and another the instrument.

TCG sets Expedition, Skyridge, and Aquapolis are the only expansions that contain applications. EX Ruby and Sapphire, EX Sandstorm, EX Dragon, and EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua only contain Pokedex entries. An important note is that not every card in an expansion contains a dot code.

There is no cross-compatibility between other games. It's all self-contained within the Pokemon TCG. It's a fun novelty for TCG collectors, and I hope Nintendo eventually does the same thing with Amiibo technology.

Yes. Keep in mind that while the e reader can be used on any system, e reader cards are region locked.
You'll need a Japanese reader should you acquire Japanese cards.

Yeah, if it fits in the system, it's compatible with it. Even works with Game Boy Micro, which produces a rather humorous looking contraption.
