Theresia for the Nintendo DS is a horror tinged first person adventure that calls to mind the likes of Myst or D. It contains 2 separate stories, called Dear Emile and Dear Martel. It's one of the few M-rated games on the handheld, but it earns that through dark imagery and themes as opposed to explicit violence or sexual themes.

The first story, Dear Emile, is the story of an amnesiac young girl who wakes up in an asylum/dungeon, and must search out her past and solve puzzles to escape and learn her own true story. The control interface with the touch screen works pretty well in place of a point and click setup, although on a small screen it can be difficult to tell what you can and can't click on. Still, there is a nice atmosphere of dread throughout, and a few of the puzzles are pretty clever.

The second story, Dear Martel, is the story of a doctor who works to discover a cure for a disease ravaging an orphanage, but unlocks some sinister evil in the process. I haven't finished this story yet, but it seems like it may be the longer of the two from the start, though I'm told it's shorter.

I like Theresia as a theowback to PC games I used to read about, but never played. It's atmospheric, offers some good puzzles, and uses the second screen for mapping, which helps keep things moving. Parts of the game drag, adding little to the story and feeling just like puzzle interludes, but not enough to ruin it for me.

Played it? Hate it? Have any memories where it kept you entertained on a trip?

I've never played it but I own a copy, I traded for it a few years ago along with a copy of Dementium. I'll have to find it again and give it a try.

So many of these games of the day I've never heard of so I can't really contribute anything useful to those threads, but now there's a whole bunch of new games I plan to keep an eye out for. If anything I'm just surprised there's so many games on these old consoles that look good yet I'm somehow unaware of them.

This doesn't even look remotely familiar, but it's RIGHT up my alley. Man, I'm SO glad that you decided to give each Game of the Day a separate topic. I'd have NEVER followed any of these amazing posts otherwise.

    You have some FANTASTIC picks.

Thanks for making me regret not having a DS.

I have to know, is the 3DS backwards compatible with the original DS?

The 3DS plays all DS games (some "DSi-enhanced" games like Sonic Classic Collection are region-locked).

Isn't that a 3DS it's being shown on in the original post? I only have 2 DS lites, so I'm not sure if that's a 3DS, or a DSi or what.

That is in fact an original model 3DS in the original post I was playing it on. The vast majority of original DS games work fine on it. It's mainly stuff that used the GBA slot on an original DS that's a problem, like the Arkanoid controller and such.

Wait, there were DS games that used GBA port peripherals? Really? An Arkanoid controller?

Just wanted to bring the Guitar Hero games up, they use a special controller that's mandatory to play the games. It's only compatible with the DS Lite, it won't fit in the original DS. Not a big loss though if you can't play these games.

My Health Coach was another one, it used a pedometer that plugged into the GBA slot. I can't think of any more at the moment that use the slot, ignoring the various DS games that can optionally use save data from earlier GBA games in the same series.
