    Default Quick Dreamcast lightgun Question

I was browsing around my local gamestop the other day and happened upon a sega brand lightgun for dreamcast. i was under the impression that the sega brand lightgun was only available in japan. is this true and i stumbled upon a decent find? or was the gun domestically released? thanks

You know what I myself never found a sega brand light gun for the sega dreamcast, I find that strange because I waited for a while till I just ended up buying interact, the strangest part I have not to this day seen a sega dreamcast light gun in stores at all??? So I wonder if that statement you made about the sega brand light guns for dreamcast being availbie in japan is the issue here.

I'm going to go on a limb here and say that the employee probably bought it back not knowing that it's the Japanese version.

In Europe/Australia PAL countries, I know there was an official Sega Dreamcast gun. However, I think it was a repackaged gun from another company (madcatz?). Don't put my word on it though, as I just remember hearing that from somewhere.

I myself have a madcatz third party gun, and it is different than the official Sega ones that were sold here however.

so i finally managed to pull out House of the Dead 2 and give this thing a shot. to my surprise, it's region locked. boot up game, and it gives me

"peripheral at port a is not supported in north america"

is there any way to determine if this is japan or europe based? and is there any possible way to get around the region lock?

the side of the gun says

    "Sega HKT-7800
    Sega Enterprises, LTD.
    Made In Japan"

past that, no other information on the gun.

What does it look like? is it predominantly white with a blue handle? If I could get a pic then I could confirm if it's the European sold one. (I don't know if the Japanese guns were any different though)

I remember reading a thread on a messageboard that said that some euro/japanese guns were region locked, but only with certain games. (I.E. they would not work for HOTD2 and Confidential Mission, but they may for Virtua Cop + others.)

I never had any problem with my gun however.

    Alright, here's the facts:

The Sega-brand DC gun WAS NOT released in America and none are compatible with US DC's. I thought someone would have said this by now, since I considered it to be fairly common knowledge (hey, not insulting, I guess this is just not as well known as I thought ). The decision not to bring the Sega gun over was a mysterious one, some think it had something to do with Columbine (which took place the same year that the DC came out if you remember). Looks like you'll have to track down a Interact/Mad Catz/Hong Kong offbrand gun in order to play your gun games . Hope that helps. (For reference this can be found in print in an older issue of EGM that previewed the DC launch titles and accessories right before launch, I believe Spider Man was on the cover).

"Official Sega Light Gun for use with games like House of the Dead 2, Virtua Cop 2, etc.
** Note: Does not work with US HODT2. "

They sell the Australian/europe and Japan gun as the same product just different region, so i would asume that they are identical. I guess the only way to use a sega gun on a US DC would be to buy an import HoTD2. Ive got a PAL sega gun (pretty sure it is, didnt come with box but im pretty sure its PAL) and it works fine with my japanese HoTD2 on my ntsc-J DC.

I also borrowed a friends Confidential mission once but that wouldnt work with my gun. I dont remember what region it was but i think it was US. I had to borrow his madcatz gun, which was the blue and white one.

    Hope that was useful.

(EDIT: Eecchh. Three other posts were made while I was typing this... )

That's the Japanese Sega-brand light gun. It seems that Sega, for some unknown reason, went out of it's way by coding House of the Dead 2 to NOT work with the Japanese Sega-brand light gun. Confidential Mission won't work either. :/ I'm not sure about the other two light gun games, Death Crimson OX and Virtua Cop 2. All other third-party light guns will work fine. Since the games themselves are programmed not to work with the Japanese light guns, the guns are 100% compatible with the American Dreamcast console. The Japanese light guns will work with Japanese import light gun games played on a modded American console.

Maybe there's a way around it. Who knows. If you have one, try plugging in a third-party light-gun, booting-up the game, then plugging in the Japanese gun.

Maybe there's a way to modify the gun itself so the game thinks it's third-party...

Let us know if that trick works out.

If not, the MadCatz guns are better than the other US alternatives.

Check ebay for some cool black DC guns that look like Namco Light guns. They are pretty good, I hear.

I can't seem to find them. Could you give a link?

These are the guns I use, BTW.

Also, while Googling for other lightguns, I came across THIS. It lists it as being compatible with Silent Scope. How the hell would they pull that off? :/

Sorry for bumping this ancient topic, but it seems to be the most pertinent of 3 I found in this section:

    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=93748
    &
    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83122

My query is regarding 3rd Party lightguns for Dreamcast and the ever curious prospect of playing Silent Scope using said lightguns. Now, when looking on wikipedia I read that the SRC Bio Gun actually has compatibilty with SS. Needless to say, this really goes against what everyone says. Obviously, it's not the only one as pointed out in this thread, but can anyone actually confirm this to be true?

Outside wikipedia, I seem to only get hits via mostly German websites selling this lightgun and little information on it's capabilities. Recently I've become interested in getting a lightgun for Dreamcast, the only problem is that there aren't many games beyond Confidential Mission and HotD2 I'd want to get since I always understood SS was non-lightgun capable. That makes this Bio Gun prospect very enticing.

Alright, I can't say this for certain but I vaguely remember hearing that you can use the Japanese light gun on an american dreamcast if you're running the PAL version of Confidential Mission. If memory serves me right, this works and was at one point confirmed by a few people.

    Still though, not sure.
