My son is 15 months old, and he likes to play with some of the plush toys on my game shelves, so if he's in my basement, I'm probably not playing. I do let him play with them, though, and I let him hold controllers with me or sit on my lap and mash on the arcade game controls. He's started to figure out that there's a correlation between the controls and what happens on the screen, especially with Centipede, so that's fun to watch.
I put some sacrificial FDS games, HuCards, gamepads, etc. within my son's reach. There's no way to say "No!" to kids and have your gaming time undisturbed, so it's better to let them explore and a little "bait" will keep them satisfied and maybe not reach for things you don't want them to touch.
