OK, I got my first XBOX 360 this year. Yay. But there's a lot I don't know about these things, and I've spent perhaps less than an hour with my 360. So forgive my lack of knowledge here.

I've heard you can get free (as in freeware) game downloads for your 360. That's right, complete, free games sans any junk like in-app purchases or DLC or other up-sells nor the requirement of a paid, Gold XBOX Live subscription. I mean, things like full games from the "Arcade" or "Indie Games" section. Is this true? If so, what are the steps to getting the freeware? And speaking of which, if there are any games like what I described, are any of them worth the time to download them? Heck, are they even playable offline? Single-player and offline are what I'm really going for, but multiplayer offline is definitely a positive too.

(Also... what other types of downloads are free? Patches, demos, etc. - are these possible without paying for XB Live?)
