    Default Sonic 2: 14 Continues

For those of you who play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) on the Sega Genesis, the 14 continues code will also have the side effect of playing the Oil Ocean Zone's music throughout the game. I think that to correct this part of the problem on the first issues of the ROM, you are supposed to enter the stage select code resembling Yuji Naka's date of birth (19,65,09,17) before you enter the 14 continues code itself (01,01,02,04), correct? Both of these code executions are done on the first game options screen.

This glitch was corrected in Rev. 02 of the ROM. On the Rev. 02 version of the ROM, inputting 01,01,02,04 will not only play the Oil Ocean Zone theme song but you will also hear the Continue chime to let you know the code worked.

I never even knew Sonic 2 had a "14 continues" code

What causes the OOZ theme to play all the time is due to an invalid soundbyte in the ROM code. This occurs due to the fact bit 7 was blocked in error (the "AND #$7F") in the continue chime code, which turns $BF into $3F.

What should be $BF at either ROM address 009789 (rev. 00) or 009795 (rev. 01) is instead given as $3F. ROM hackers, after changing $3F to $BF (the correct byte for the continue jingle sound), the code will work correctly now.

It should be known that if you play Sonic 2 with the Sonic & Knuckles add-on, the 14 continues code will be different: instead, enter 01, 00, 01, 08.
