Question WHAT WAS THE FIRST game you ever recall that verbally spoke the game title in the intro?

I'm having a hard time thinking of it, besides Dragon's Lair, which said it in the attract mode, but I don't want to count that since it was a laser disc game. I suppose I'm asking what was the first BESIDES those Don Bluth laser disc arcade titles.

I want to say the first I heard was something pre-disc, that played a garbled digital sample, but I just don't know right off. Any of you remember what yours was?

No, wait...Astro Blaster. I think that was it. In fact, I think it was the first time I heard a video game 'speak' at all. Hmmm, it was only during the attract mode though now that I think about it. I'm still wondering what the first was to say the title at the title screen.

I don't recall if it's spoken during attract mode, but I think it was Sinistar for me. Damn it. Now I have to play Sinistar. I love Sinistar.

I want to love Sinistar, but I have no idea how to play it. I've tried here and there for years, but I have no idea how you defeat Sinistar. I don't think I've ever made it beyond Sinistar forming the first time he does. I don't remember doing it anyway. This was always a big deal with me, because I was ALWAYS really good at arcade games, so it was very frustrating that I was completely terrible at Sinistar. Same with Popeye, Kangeroo and Mappy.

I eventually got decent at Kangeroo, 'meh' at Popeye, but I've ALWAYS been TERRIBLE at Mappy...and Sinistar.

BTW, you may be right about Sinistar saying the title at the titlescreen too. I think it may say it when you coin drop.

It's all about making enough bombs to kill Sinistar, and even then, it's tough as nails.

I suck at Popeye, too. I even have a cabinet, but I can barely break 100,000. I'm just not great at it.

The first one that I can recall hearing the title of was Double Dribble.

That's the thing. I just feel like it's not very good game design. The game basically makes it all or nothing, and it's usually nothing unless you're fucking AMAZING at the game. If you don't manage to make enough bombs in the first few minutes of play there's just no way win the fight with Sinistar. You can't even run to harvest more crystals when he's after you. At least in my experiences.

Yeah, the shit is just tough. I haven't played it since I was a teenager, and not much even then, but the gameplay seemed a little more complicated than it needed to be. It was straight up cryptic when I was a kid.

Popeye I don't find as much cryptic as I do just that I don't sync up with it well. Something about its patterns just doesn't work with my hands for whatever reason. Sinistar... I started getting considerably better at it after they put it on Midway Arcade Treasures 1, and I could really practice it. I'd love a cabinet, but that's not an easy one to get at a reasonable price.

For me, the first game I saw at home saying it's own name, it was a PacMan clone for the MSX computer called "Oh Shit".

The first thing that popped into my head was Taskmaker on the Mac, which I discovered in the mid-1990s. As a kid I played Dragon's Lair and Sinistar briefly in the arcade, I think, but I don't remember hearing the titles announced...

...oh, wait, I think it might've been Space Megaforce on the SNES, which was one of my first SNES rentals (so late 1992/early 1993, probably). I distinctly remember that. I also played Super Metroid, which says the word "Metroid" in the opening cutscene/text block, but doesn't actually say "Super Metroid".

While I'm sure I heard several, the main ones for me were Konami's Blades of Steel and Double Dribble.

Pretty sure the first Intellivoice game released was Space Spartans, and that one does say its name in the title (after "Mattel Electronics presents...", of course). All the Intellivoice titles said their own titles in the intro splash screen (well, I think the one for Tron: Solar Sailer only spoke the first word), though "Bhueeeeeeee-Seventaeeeeen Baaaaaaaawwwwwmmmmmmeeeeerrrrr!" was the most enthusiastic one.

Frickin' Micheal Jackson's Moonwalker is the first one I can actually remember. It lived in a Wal-Mart mini-arcade.

I'm sure there was something prior that's not coming to mind, but the earliest I can recall hearing was Wheel of Fortune for the NES.

While it doesn't qualify for this list here, that was exactly my reaction of Tecmo Bowl for the NES.

For me, it was hearing speech coming out of my TV while playing Berzerk on my 5200. It blew my 5 year old mind!
