Default Another cash-in? Sega announces Genesis/Mega Drive Mini

    https://techcrunch.com/2019/03/30/se...-in-september/

I know that Sega has been producing their Flashback consoles through AtGames for the past several years, but this looks like it was meant as an answer to the NES/SNES Classic Mini (and again, a less-than-inventive name). Supposed to offer 40 built-in games (nothing mentioned about playing actual cartridges, as with the AtGames offerings), with the following having been announced thus far:

    • Ecco the Dolphin
    • Castlevania: Bloodlines
    • Space Harrier II
    • Shining Force
    • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
    • ToeJam & Earl
    • Comix Zone
    • Sonic the Hedgehog
    • Altered Beast
    • Gunstar Heroes

Release is set for September 19th, and the US price has been set at $80. Another article about it can be found here, and Sega's own page about the Mega Drive Mini (in Japanese) can be found here.

Agreed, pretty good selection, and 40 games is a decent amount.

I wonder if the presence of Castlevania: Bloodlines on this means Konami might skip including Bloodlines on the Castlevania collection they're putting out.

Awesome this will be a nice way to round out my mini console collection. Now if they would just release a TG-16 mini....

This was technically announced last year, but has been greatly delayed. Looks very nice, and will pick one up. Personally I prefer the 3-button pads being included. Hopefully the emulation is spot on.

Yeah, one thing I find promising about this Mini is that Sega finally decided to not take the lazy way out and release still another crappy clone through AtGames as they've been doing for several years now. Apparently that's what caused the delay; Sega originally intended to work with AtGames yet again on the Mini as a follow-up to the Flashback HD, but they must've finally wised up and realized that the AtCrap just doesn't hold a candle to Nintendo's well-done mini consoles. Hopefully, Sega will be able to produce something which makes for a proper answer to Nintendo's mini consoles, and is able to get them to stores in sufficient numbers.

AtGames was more interested in pumping out in quantity, barely improving what were still highly inferior products. This will sell decently, but frankly, this is a one-time deal. I mean, once you have one, why would you need to buy more in the future? Unless they shockingly decide to do the same for Saturn or Dreamcast.

Yeah, that's pretty much been the case with the numerous Atari Flashbacks past the 2. I'm glad that Nintendo has provided some true competiton in the mini console market since all of the AtCrap had been sailing along on its mediocrity for far too long. I could see Sega releasing a follow-up version of the Genesis/MD Mini which looks like the II, likely with six button controllers, and possibly featuring SegaCD and/or 32X games as well. Beyond that, I'm not sure whether there's enough nostalgia to support a Saturn/DC Mini, but if Nintendo were to release a N64 Mini, it may well prove a possibility.

Why does Japan get the six-button controller but not the US?

Probably for nostalgia, as the 3-button was the stock controller for most of the system's life.

Good thing, that M2 is doing the software emulation this time around since they have experience through the sega ages releases.I'm surprised that konami license out castlevania bloodlines for the genesis mini though.

I'm glad that Yuzo Koshiro is composing the music for the menus of the Genesis / Mega Drive Mini. He's worked on a lot of 8-bit and 16-bit SEGA games and will be sampling the included games' music for the menus. He composed the music for some of my favorite Game Gear games!

You'd be surprised. Plenty of people seem to keep rebuying the same games over and over again. Even for this version there's no mention if this is in 4K or not so there'll have to be a 4K version for people to buy at some point.

They're adding The Wily Wars, Tetris, and Monster World IV to this? It's looking interesting at the very least. How'd they manage Tetris as I thought they lost the rights to sell a home console version?

I guess sega was listening in putting monster world iv on the (genesis mini) such a classic for the console.Still i'm baffled why,VF2 is in there i'd rather play the arcade original or the saturn port instead. If sega needed another fighter i think fatal fury 2 would have been a better choice the combos, that you can pull off are way better compared to the neo-geo original.

That's a really solid lineup. It's great to see the official English release of Monster World IV on there, considering its availability has decreased since its release in 2012 (as you obviously can't get it on Wii anymore, and I don't know if it's playable on any current gen system. I think the PSN release is PS3-only.)

The rights were managed for decades by ELORG (USSR) then The Tetris Company. While yes Nintendo had them at the time, I don't believe that contract lasted much longer as they were selling Tetris ports and sequels on competing systems within a few years.

Meanwhile in Japan, the newest additions are:

    1. Alisia Dragoon
    2. Assault Suits Leynos
    3. Columns
    4. Darius
    5. Dynamite Headdy
    6. Langrisser II
    7. Lord Monarch
    8. Monster World IV
    9. Road Rash II
    10. Slap Fight MD
    11. Snow Bros.: Nick & Tom
    12. Tetris

But that's not all! As a Japanese exclusive, there is also the Tower Mini. That's right, there will be a special set of add-ons for the Mega Drive Mini called the Mega Drive Tower Mini. It will include non-functional, plastic replicas of the various extra add-ons for the original console. The tower includes a mini Super 32X, a mini Mega CD, a mini lock-on cartridge of Sonic & Knuckles, and a mini Mega Drive cartridge of Sonic The Hedgehog. The tower will launch the same day as the Mega Drive Mini on September 19, 2019. The Tower Mini will cost 3,980 yen ($37 USD).

The game differences don’t bug me too much as a lot of the different ones I never cared for. It’s a shame they have so many games that are on nearly every genesis collection though.
I’m more sad about the 6 button controller and that tower mini addon set being JP only than anything else
