Default Retron 5 Game Gear Ax Battler Issue: no display, only music

Has anyone experienced a Game Gear cartridge play fine in one system, but then in a Retron 5 the Sega logo displays, then the game BGM and SFX can be heard but no image is displayed?

Does the cartridge carry the graphics data over just one or some number of contacts?

Or is the graphics data stored in a separate memory than the program and music data?

How could a cartridge load and play but not display any image?

What game is it? I'm just wondering if it's a weird compatibility issue as there were a few different Game Gear redesigns with changes made to the screen, like one was glass but the other was plastic, etc.

Ax Battler, European release - afaik it's the same as the US release,
I sold it on eBay and it's not working for the buyer. Im waiting to hear back some more details about their GG unit.

It turns out the buyer is trying to play it on a Retron5

It sounds like it's an emulation issue. Someone else posted that Ax Battler doesn't work on the Retron 5.

Makes me think itd be a good idea to state in listings that the game is only guaranteed to work on the original system

It could be something that was already fixed in a firmware update, the buyer might not have bothered to update his console. It's hard to find any info specifically on this game regarding compatibility issues. I posted what I could find, it makes me think it was quickly addressed at some point. Or there was a different limited version of this game which has issues as some games get different revisions sometimes.

I always worry about this kind of thing when I sell game stuff on eBay. That somebody will claim a game doesn't work, when I've verified it does, because they're trying on unofficial hardware or an incompatible TV or even just a really dirty system. I hope your buyer isn't making too much of a fuss, insisting it's broken.
