Default How many "Contra clones" were there in the 8/16-bit era?

I know about Sunset Riders (Contra in the Old West), which I think got a pseudo-sequel in the form of a Disney licensed game "Cowboys of Moo Mesa" or something (which I remember thinking was a stupid cartoon when it was on but the game is supposed to be good), and also there was Metal Slug, itself a spiritual follow up to the two Gun Force games.

But otherwise... what else was there?

Depends on how similar to Contra you want them to be, but this list should cover a fair number of them:

Finally just beat the NES Contra! Wow, what a game. Without the Konami cheat no less.

@mkenyon2 I beat NES Contra awhile ago. Had an experience where... I actually uploaded a video of it but yeah, basically on the first loop I lost all my lives at one pit I had trouble jumping, and then beat the game.... I decided to just keep going until I died completely so went thru the second loop and... beat it without dying. I was like "GOD DAMMIT GAME, KILL ME ALREADY." Third loop finally did it.

I never did beat Super C. Operation C, or Contra Hard Corps (except for one secret ending you can get in the junkyard level) and I never played Contra III at all. Hoping to rectify that.

By the way the arcade Contras are worth playing too. The NES games are based on the arcade ones but there's enough differences to make both worth experiencing.

Older wise i was thinking of midnight resistance arcade and genesis.Modern wise last time i seen a new run'n'gun was cuphead, which did have a port to the switch recently. There have been rumors about snk to revisit the metal slug series but shall see if that happens at all.Right now i'm waiting for blazing chrome a indie style run'n'gun game due to hit some time this year.

I'll say this blazing chrome really looks like it was really inspire by contra.
